Hello,

I unfortunately managed to contract an infection of spy sherrif. I have been able to remove all I can of it to the limit of my knowledge. The steps I have followed are as follows:

1. Reboot XP (SP2 already unfortunately) in safe mode.
2. Run - smitRen - Runthisbat.bat
3. Run - Ewido Security Suite full system scan and deleted all spyware detected
4. Reset internet settings in control panel
5. Checked for the existance of any left over desktop themes (there where none)
6. Reboot to normal start
7. Run Panda Active scan and deleted all problem files

This left two windows popups in the system tray (started with 3) but I was able to find the problem files:

This has removed the remaining two system tray annoyances.

I have also installed Ad-aware SE Personal, Spy-bot SD, Webroot Spy Sweeper, Trojan Hunter and the winsock fix for XP. Several of these detected spyware applications and worms including one instance of spy sherrif lingering in the registry. I have also run a full system scan with Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 but it has come up clean.

Despite all this, whenever I enable my network connection my computer is constantly accesssing the internet. If left to run, after a short while I receive a notifiaction of Internet Security scanning outgoing mail even though it is definately not me sending any messages. So I guess that spy sherrif or something else it installed remains active. Here is my Hijackthis log file. Any help you can provide will save me from wipping it and starting again....... something I am hoping to avoid.

Yes Trend Micro is installed and I can assure you that it starts up automatically. I don't know why it isn't in the startup list!?!

its possible that Trend Micro simply doesn't use conventional startups. I was just confirming, as I dont have a system running Trend Micro to test it on


I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.


Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
• You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
• If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

I also ran a Webroot Spy sweeper Scan using their 14 day eveluation download and it picked up 3 other trojans that the other programs did not. Since then, it appears that the constant accessing of the internet has ceased and hopefully the aftermath of spy sherrif is now cleaned up.

I'd be interested to know if you identify anything else sitting there that shouldn't be from looking at the scan logs though?

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a paid product like NOD32 or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and Kerio.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox or Opera
