hello and welcome to Geekstogo :)

Quite a mess you have here, lets get you cleaned up :tazz:

Did you follow the recomendations here?

The reason i ask is that it appers from your log you didn't do everything. Please follow all the steps up to #5. after that is done please post a fresh Hijack this log.

If you did do the all the steps listed, please just indicate that so that I may plan my next move.

thanks

ok fair enough. I think the priority would be to get him back online. there will be a lot of files he needs and not all of them are small enough to put on floppies. plus we need to make some online scans.

Unfotunately since you used winsocket we dont' know what might have cause the internet connection problem.

I would recommend do a system restore to a point just before using winsocket, and posting fresh Hijack this log so I have a better Idea what we might be dealing with.

well lets see what we can do,

Try restarting the computer using "last known good configuration":
1. Start Windows, or if it is running, shut Windows down, and then turn off the computer.
2. Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that this process is happening.
3. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
4. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select the Last Known Good Configuration menu item, and then press Enter.

Let me know if this gets teh interent connection back up and running in the next post with the rkfiles log.

Download rkfiles.zip and unzip it to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:

* Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
* As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
* Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
* Press the Enter key.

Locate the rkfiles.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt back here and I will review it when it comes in.

ok, since you can't get into safe mode, lets use a different tool that will give me the same results :tazz:

Please download Rootkit Revealer (link is at the very bottom of the page)
  • Unzip it to your desktop.
  • Open the rootkitrevealer folder and double-click rootkitrevealer.exe
  • Click the Scan button (bottom right)
  • It may take a while to scan (don't do anything while it's running)
  • When it's done, go up to File > Save. Choose to save it to your desktop.
  • Open rootkitrevealer.txt on your desktop and copy the entire contents and paste them here

Ya well we have a big problem.

The problem with safe mode was... it loaded up to the user menu, I logon to a user it says loading settings, then goes to saving settings and logs off before getting to the desktop.

Now thats happening aswell when not in safe mode, ive never seen this before.

use the f8 process and try the "last known good configuration" option again. This time keep the machine up until we get things working. Also disconnect from the internet during all repairs, unless you have to download a file

If it is stable after that, please do the following immediately.

Please run a free online virus scan here (tick the "Auto Clean" checkbox):
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

And a free trojan scan here:
http://www.moosoft.com/

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and we'll remove what's left.
