anyone,
well here we go,
my "buddy" was watching my house and i said go ahead and use my computer while you are here.
well i come back and find out that he was "helping me out and uping my RAM".
i don't know what he did but his friend said i needed a new mother board.
he got a new one for me.it's a Gigabyte GAU-K8U
it's too big for my hp tower so, he got a new tower. put everything in and tried to start it.
after about two days we got windows xp back up and running. install the drivers off the cd with the motherboard, installed the driver for the nvidia card i have and it all looked good to go.
WELL while inthe internet my auto updates pops up and starts downloading stuff and said do you want it to install new updates.(done this before and no problems, hey the are from microsoft)
it tells me i need to restart windows. i do and...
on start up it gets to windows is loading and loops back to the hole "beep" retsart, "beep" restart.
i try doing a restore on it(had to re reg windows now like 4 times) bake to last know good which is right when i re regs windows and right before the update(it told me to make a back up point for gods sake)
tried that no go. tried boot from disk with the os dick i got with this thing and do a repair.
no go. i let it go over night and in the morn my"buddy" show up and said to reset the COMS(whatever that is)
so i do it by the numbers in the mother board user's manual
nothing! but no this line comes up saying about a MS config thing not found or something.
well i'm piss now and i'm like screw it and put in the HP recov disk the computre told me to make when i got it and i try a recov with it
nothing. it comes up to boot from disk
well now i don't what it to do that so i shut it down and start it back up and go the the bios part and put it so it starts from the hard drive like it should.
restarts, lots of stuff comes up and it just sets. no lights flashing or anything
i'm at a loss so i restart it again
nothing
so i put back in the recove disk and pick wipe it clean and make it like i just bought it
it's still "working" on that and it's 1:33 (12%) into it.
any help on what happen or what i did and how to prevent it from happening again would be great.
if any one lives in San diego and can fix it for some beer let me know

right....so basically it was AFTER you installed the windows update?
.....
..........
............was it service pack 2 by any chance?

this time around i think if you make sure you go on the internet and get the very latest drivers for everything you have and then try it it should hopefuly work.

Probably a problem with the file-system, unless you somehow partitionned it only to 13 gigs.

START/run/diskmgmt.msc

Now, at the top it should list your partition with windows.
Beneath that, should be a listing of ur hdd, and any CD drives you have.

For the line saying "Disk 0"
Are there any zones seen with a BLACK bar at top and saying "unallocated"?

If so, your HDD has a huge chunk that you told it Not to use, and i can tell you how to fix that, should this be the case.

You're not a retard, not at all. A retard woulda said 'my hard drive is screwed' and went out and got another hard drive and had the same thing happen with the new hard drive, then s/he woulda been out alot of money when it wasn't necessary. :tazz:

Go back into Disk Management, and right click the black area that says unallocated and select NEW PARTITION. Follow the onscreen wizard to create the new partition.

You can't easily blend them together. You can google for partition magic, but I believe you have to pay for it.

Since you just reinstalled windows, why not just do another reinstall, but this time make sure during setup that you delete all current partitions that are listed and then create just ONE partition. Would be the easiest and simplest solution.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up.

Unless you dont mind having 2 partitions, which isnt a bad thing, cause you can keep all your data on the big partition, and have windows tucked safely on the 13 gig partition, and make backups a whole lot easyer.

Personally i have 8 different partitions, 1 for windows specifically

You shouldnt have any problems, the drive letter doesnt matter unless you have a program installed in that partition.

Seeing how it's a new partition, should work fine.
