It's slow more than likely because the IDE controller drivers are having problems and in turn this has forced the IDE Controller into MS-DOS compatibility mode.

Download and install the latest motherboard chipset drivers for your motherboard, you can get these drivers from the PC manufacturers website or the motherboard manufacturers website.

If you need help finding the drivers, post your computer model and we'll try and help.

OK--I could find nothing in setup about BIOS defaults or failsafe defaults. All I see is an F9 option which loads system configuration defaults. I selected this and exited saving.

Then went to the control panel device manager where right clicking on the yellow marked items brings up properties, which leads me to an option to update drivers. When I select this and the option to look on the web and look on the Win 98SE cd, it does not find anything to update or says I am using the most updated. I cannnot specify a specific folder or web site to look in as I don't know where to look or what to look for.

OK, some more info.

On the Dell website I found some procedures for troubleshooting CD/DVD drives. It said that I should remove the Intel Bus Master IDE COntroller to force reinstall of drivers. The reinstall happened, but I still have yellow ticks by the primary and secondary IDE controllers in the Device Manager.

I also removed the "standard floppy controller". On reboot, it looked for but could not find the drivers to reinstall. I don't know where to look for them.

Under System. Perfomance on the control panel, drives A and C are shown as using "MS-DOS compatibility mode file system"

I downloaded a trial version of Everest Ultimate (freeware Home is discontinued). System summary is pasted in below.

On the performance tab besides what devices are using compatability mode
did it list which drivers are using compatability mode.
Did you unplug the external USB devices?
if the status of your floppy disk drive in Device Manager is listed in MS-DOS Compatibility mode), try the troubleshooting tips in the following sections.

Safe Mode
Start Windows in Safe mode and try to access the floppy disk drive. To start Windows 95 in Safe mode, restart your computer, press the F8 key when you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. To start Windows 98 in Safe mode, restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.

If you can access the floppy disk drive, follow these steps:

1. Use the right mouse button to click My Computer, then click Properties on the menu that appears.
2. Click the Device Manager tab.
3. Double-click Floppy Disk Controllers.
4. Click the floppy disk controller for the drive you are having problems with, then click Properties.
5. In Windows 95, click the Original Configuration (Current) check box to clear it. In Windows 98, click the Disable In This Hardware Profile check box to select it. This disables the Windows protected-mode driver for the floppy disk drive controller.
6. Click OK.
7. Restart Windows normally.
If you can access the floppy disk drive successfully after following the above steps, the following conditions may be true:
• The floppy disk drive controller may not be supported in protected mode.
• There are drivers loading in the Config.sys or AUTOEXEC.BAT file that may be necessary for protected-mode access.
• There are drivers loading in the CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT file that may be causing conflicts in Windows and need to be disabled.
If you still cannot access the floppy disk drive after following steps 1-7, follow these steps:
1. Use the right mouse button to click My Computer, then click Properties on the menu that appears.
2. Click the Device Manager tab.
3. Double-click Floppy Disk Controllers.
4. Click the floppy disk controller, and then click Remove to remove the controller.
5. Click OK.
6. In Control Panel, double-click Add New Hardware.
7. Click Next, and then click Yes to allow Windows to detect the hardware in your computer.
8. When the Add New Hardware Wizard is finished, restart the computer and try to access the floppy disk drive again.
Redetecting the floppy disk controller should resolve any addressing problems with the controller by detecting the correct address range. If the floppy disk controller is not detected correctly, there may be a problem with the floppy disk controller. If the floppy disk controller is redetected but you still cannot access the floppy disk drive, there may be a problem with the floppy disk.

Some of the instructions I have already been through based on previous suggestions. Let me recap:

1. The computer is extremely slow (malware was eliminated through previous forum topic) and Windows Explorer finds the internal hard disk © and the internal floppy (A). The floppy works when I put disks into it. Wind Expl also finds an external (USB) cd R/W (F), although I now have this unplugged. Wind Expl does not find the internal DVD rom or the internal Iomega zip drive.
2. In the device manager, there were originally three yellow marks, next to:
floppy disk
standard floppy disk controller

hard disk
primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)

Based on some instructions on the Dell web site, in the Device Manager I removed the “Intel Bus Master IDE Controller” and the "standard floppy controller" to force reinstall of drivers. The reinstall happened, but

a) I still have yellow ticks by the primary and secondary IDE controllers in the Device Manager
b) For the floppy, it looked for but could not find the drivers to reinstall. I don't know where to look for them. Now this shows up as an “Unknown Device” with a yellow question mark in the Device Manager. When I select this under “Add New Hardware”, it tells me the device is already installed but I have to install drivers. Neither the computer nor I can find the drivers. When I follow instructions from you guys to “Disable this Hardware Profile”, Wind Expl shows the A: floppy, but it cannot access it. I then unchecked “Disable”, reboot, and it detects it as a 5 ¼ drive. I then have to go into setup and call up the floppy set up, change to auto (rather than OS) setup, reboot, and it goes back to the previous state, usable floppy but yellow “Unknown Device” in Device Manager.

3. Under System. Performance on the control panel, drives A and C are shown as using "MS-DOS compatibility mode file system"
4. Maybe all of this would work if I knew where to find these drivers? Maybe this isn’t really the problem—but you guys know better than me.

You can download the drivers from the Dell support site.

The reason the computer is slow is because the drive is running in dos compatability mode this is what we need to fix.

• Device Manager displays an exclamation point (!) in a yellow circle for the primary and secondary IDE channels
If you uninstall and then reinstall the hard disk controller, this behavior is not resolved.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the protected-mode driver for the hard disk controller is not properly initialized when you start Windows. When this occurs, a NOIDE value is placed in the registry which prevents Windows from making future attempts to initialize the protected-mode driver.

Are you game to edit the registry?

Is it then correct that location and downloading chipset or other drivers will not help?

If this is the case, I suppose I'm game for editing the registry, but I don't really know this stuff. I'd be taking your lead. What are the odds I lose computer functioning?

If we take care all should be ok.
1st thing quick look at this is this your computer if not what is the dell model
Dell computer.

2) If you have a look in my signature there is a link for registry back up.
3) Did you try what I posted about the floopy drive.
4) I can understand you being worried about the registry, so after you answer the above if you still are not advanced any further we can just go sightseeing in the registry we won't change anything just yet just a look
how does this sound?
5) Do you know how to disable your autoexec & config files.
Cheers

If we take care all should be ok.
1st thing quick look at this is this your computer if not what is the dell model
Dell computer.

IT IS A DELL DIMENSION XPS R450 INSTALLED WITH WINDOWS 98 AND NOW RUNNING 98SE

2) If you have a look in my signature there is a link for registry back up.

SO THIS MEANS I SHOULD BACK UP THE ENTIRE REGISTRY BEFORE WE BEGIN, RIGHT?

3) Did you try what I posted about the floopy drive.

THE PROBLEM, AS I INDICATED, IS THAT I REMOVED THE FLOPPY DISK CONTROLLER (DRIVER?) VIA THE DEVICE MANAGER PREVIOUSLY. UNDER THE DEVICE MANAGER, I NOW SHOW "UNKNOWN DEVICE", ALTHOUGH WIND EXPL FINDS THE FLOPPY AND IT SEEMS TO READ DISKS FINE. SINCE I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO FIND THE DRIVER, WHEN I TRY TO REINSTALL THE HARDWARE, IT DOES NOT FIND THE DRIVER AND REMAINS UNKNOWN

IN SAFE MODE, THE DEVICE MANAGER HAS A DIFERENT LIST UNDER "DISK DRIVES", BUT I CAN'T TELL IF ANY RELATE TO MY FLOPPY AND NONE SEEM TO RELATE TO THE ZIP DRIVE, WHICH IS NOT OTHERWISE RECOGNIZED. SEE MORE UNDER 2b IN MY JAN 8 POSTING.

4) I can understand you being worried about the registry, so after you answer the above if you still are not advanced any further we can just go sightseeing in the registry we won't change anything just yet just a look

SOUNDS FINE, JUST TELL ME WHAT TO DO

5) Do you know how to disable your autoexec & config files.

NOPE
