When I try to start Internet Explorer I receive a runtime error.

Here's the details: Win 98SE machine, prob occurs when I try to start Internet Explorer. I think prob may be related to uninstallation of Norton AV. I don't think the prob occurred before I uninstalled Nortan AV. When I try to start IE, I get the following dialog box.

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library <<Dialog Header
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Iexplore.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

The 98SE machine doesn't have internet access now because of the problem, but I do have another XP machine that does, and both are networked. So I can't update win 98 or update IE from the 98SE machine as it currently operates. I can get to the internet from the XP machine and can move files between machine.

Any suggestions?

Thanx!

Hello!

First off, did Norton uninstall properly?

Next, what I would do is repair IE. Go into control panel ~~>add/remove programs ~~>find Internet Explorer ~~>click the remove button. A box should come up in Win 98 that asks if you want to repair the connection, say ok.

See if this fixes your problem, and let us know. There are many tricks to try, I'm sure we can get it going again for you. Another option is to reinstall IE, if you have it on a disc....but try the above first. :tazz:

Is that devil horns on katkat92? I had a cat that was like that once.

Hmmm it's been a while. I don't remember NAV giving a big problem at uninstall, but it may have had problems.

I didn't have an option to repair the IE connection. IE is now uninstalled.

Another piece of information, if I click on update windows, I get the same error message.

I assume I can download IE or Netscape on the XP machine and burn a CD or copy the file to the 98SE machine and install that. But is there some other issue with Runtime that will cause problems?

Do you have the Google Toolbar? It can cause this error.

I don't remember if I had it loaded on the 98SE machine. I do have it on the XP machine. Regardless, it doesn't matter anymore, IE is gone.

On the XP machine I downloaded Firefox 1.5 and then saved it to the 98SE machine. I installed Firefox 1.5 on the 98SE machine, it installed OK, and I can browse the web from the 98SE machine now.

So, were/are the runtime issues related to a corrupted IE? Is runtime something that should be present even when IE isn't? Now that I can browse the web with Firefox is that a sign that all is well with the 98SE world?

Thanks for any advice.

Well, Firefox runs and can get to the internet.

But Windows Update still returns the same error.

Am I looking at a rebuild on this machine?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

You could just install Win98 right over the top of the current installation. Doing so will replace any damaged files. Be sure to back up your data before you do this.

Thanks for the info Makai and bqc197. I'll probably keep futzing around with it and ultimately upgrade MB and install XP Pro.
