Right click on the Microsoft/Giant AntiSpyware icon (looks like a target) and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) and click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it after the fix, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

open Hijackthis and do a scan. Please check off the following items:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msencode] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msencode.exe

click FIX CHECKED then close Hijackthis

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
• Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msencode.exe
• Double click on that file.
• HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".
  
  Close Hijack, then reopen it
  
  
  Delete Bad Service:
  
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• click on "delete an NT service"
• Copy and paste this in the box: .NET Connection Service
• Click "ok", then reboot

after reboot, please post a fresh HiJackthis log

Hi,

There is no file called msencode.exe in the SYSTEM32 Directory. There is only a msencode.dll
The only file on the machine called msencode.exe is in the I386 Directory.

Not sure what to do here.

As you probably see, I did take your advice and I bought a virus scanner. Mcafee virus scan.

How are things running?

way better than before, but I am still getting popups for Winfixer, registry cleaner and some other websites that slow things down.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.


Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
