Given the circumstances, until you get things sorted out with the Operating System and Internet Explorer, you may want to consider using a limited user account to limit malware's ability to alter system settings and install applications. It will limit yours also, though.
However, you can use the limited account for going on the Internet, documents, etc. When you need to install software, or download something that will alter settings, you have to log out of the limited account and then log back to the account you are now on.
To create a limited account, do the following:
Go to: Start > Control Panel
Double click: User Accounts
Click: Create a new account
Name the new account in: Type a name for the new account, and click Next.
Select: Limited (If you place the cursor over Limited, it will provide you some particulars about this type of account)
Next, click: Create Account
The new account appears in the User Accounts window under '…or pick an account to change'.
Click the new entry and make whatever changes (picture, etc.) to the account.
(Confirm that the Guest Account is set to 'Off' (Default setting)).
The above is just an interim consideration. It is not, by any chance, the solution. You must obtain a valid copy of XP.
