Symantec doesn't seem to be of much help. I installed another old virus scanner that I had with no problem and ran it with no viruses found. I then tried to install a symantec 2004 version that I have and it hangs on "microsoft shared library installer". How to I fix this? What is the actual file name that I look for in program files to replace?

I posted a reply but don't see it now. I deleted everything associated with symantec and tried to reinstall but it fails with an error related to "Microsoft shared library installer". I can load another version of anti-virus and have verified that I don't have a virus. How do I correct the problem with "Microsoft shared library installer"? What file name is associated with "Microsoft shared library installer"?

I've researched this a bit and found a couple of examples with similar problems but no clear solution. It appears that it's generated from faulty uninstall of Symantec. Have you contacted them for advice?

I have contacted them and they had me run a program that they said would delete any problems. I ran it and tried to reinstall with no success. They then advised me to contact microsoft since they said it was a problem with the MS software installer program ... who advised me to contact Gateway since the software was pre-installed. I'm waiting on a reply from Gateway.
