I had a spyware infection that I dealt with. I am currently running Norton Internet Security 2006 and Webroot Spy Sweeper. After the clean up I still cannot get rid of this blue screen on my desktop that says that I still have a spyware infection. Windows says I am using a modified theme in which i cannot change my background image. How do i get rid of it?

Hello sostrosser...

Download This File and extract the zipped files. Right click on the extracted folder named "Resources" and choose "Copy". Navigate to C:Windows and right click on the Resources folder...select "Paste" and accept the change (overwrite the current files with the new ones)

Reboot and try to change your background as you normally would.

I got the file but when i unzipped it and tried to copy it to C:\Windows a couple of the files copy before i get an error msg that says:

Error Copying File or Folder

Cannot copy shellstyle: The requested operation cannot be performed an a file with a user-mapped section open.

The only button available is OK. After rebooting I still can't change the background.

Ok...

Open the Resourses folder and copy the file named Luna...Navigate to the Windows\Resources folder, open it, right click on the Luna file, and choose "Paste"...Let it overwrite the current file. Reboot and try to change the theme.

Ok the theme copied fine and I rebooted my computer. When I right click on the desktop to open the display properties window it says I am using a Modified Theme. I switched that manually to the Luna theme you provided and that seemed to work. However I still couldn't change my background under the desktop tab and when I close the display properties window and reopen it the theme has changed back to modified theme.

Right click on the desktop and choose "Properties". Click the "Desktop" tab and then the "Customize Desktop" button. Click the "Web" tab. What do you see in the "Web Pages" box?

I just tried another spyware program and found 2 more threats on my computer. When i quarantined them the blue background disappeared. Now I can set the color of the background but i still can't change the image. The preview just shows a white screen. When I open the display window it says I have a modified theme. I change it to windows xp, hit apply and it changes themes. But when I hit ok and reopen the window it has changed back to modified theme.

Under the web tab the only entry is: My Current Home Page

Both commands were accepted but when I rebooted I still couldn't change the background and the theme is still stuck as Modified Theme.

Ok...

Download FixDeskTop and extract the file. Right click on the extracted file and choose "Merge"...accept the change. Reboot and see if your settings work properly.

SOLUTION

Found your thread here when faced with same problem...
Turns out it the malware had made a registry edit for "NoHTMLWallpaper"...

Try this:

Cheers!

Good suggestion, journalizt...thank you.

I might add that registry edits, no matter how simple they seem, can be tricky...be careful when doing this.

ForceActiveDesktopOn
NoActiveDesktop
NoActiveDesktopChanges
NoCloseDragDropBands
NoDriveTypeAutoRun
NoMovingBands
NoSaveSettings
NoThemesTab

under -- HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ ActiveDesktop -- the following entires were listed:
