Hey August_H,

Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Click the Clean up button
  • Click YES at the next prompt (list downloaded, Do you want to begin cleanup process?)
  • Click NO to the reboot, and just delete the OTmove it program from your desktop

Nice job your log looks clean !
    How is it running ?
Please use the following suggestion to help prevent reinfection.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
    * CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
I highly recommend downloading the following programs, to keep nasties of your computer to begin with.
The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
**Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found HERE**

Ad-Aware 2007 Free - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
**Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found HERE**

SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
**Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found HERE**

SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
**Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found HERE**

ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

AntiVirus Program An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like Active Virus Shield or AVG, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
DO NOT install more than one antivirus program. They will conflict, and provide less protection, not more.
**Tutorial on installing & using Active Virus Shield can be found HERE**

Firewall A firewall is definatley a must have. I reccomend Comodo.
**Tutorial on Firewalls can be found HERE**

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

You must stay on top of your updates at all times, for the above mentioned applications.

It is vitaly important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by microsoft.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

Good luck and safe surfing :whistling:

MoNsTeReNeRgY22,

Thanks, but my computer is still very sick. None of the original symptoms I posted have abated. Specifically:

* I still get frequent pop-ups of two kinds. One kind opens Internet Explorer windows. The other kind opens a different kind of window that fades in and out and does not appear related to the browser.

* The computer still will not install Spybot, any of the AVG programs, or any of several other spyware scrubbers. The main executable files for these programs are not permitted to exist on the system. As soon as any file having the name of one of the main executables from those programs (e.g., SpybotSD.exe) is unpacked or copied, or as soon as any file is renamed to that name, it is instantly and automatically deleted.

* I still cannot download the ActiveX downloads for Panda or the other ActiveX-based spyware scanners. ActiveX controls for other types of sites download and run fine. I believe this also is a targeted problem caused by malware.

* Windows Auto Update and Security Center are shut down every time I boot up.

* The machine will not start in Safe Mode.

I believe we have not even detected, let alone fixed, the main problem(s). Is there anything else you can suggest?

Thanks.

August H.

Hey August_H,

I am sorry to hear that your PC is still very sick. No worries though, we will get it all fixed up! :whistling:

1)You have a downloader trojan called Downloader.Agent.awf or Downloader.Agent.ayy. This trojan replaces legitimate files that are common on most computers with an infected file. It then moves the legitimate file to a "bak" or backup folder. Please follow the directions below to run FindAWF so we can identify the files that have been infected and the backups then restore them.

* Click here to download FindAWF.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
  • It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
  • Press any key and the FindAWF tool will begin scanning your computer for the infected AWF files and the backups the trojan created.
  • It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
  • When it is complete, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt which will automatically be saved to your desktop or whatever location you ran the file from.
  • Come back here to this thread and copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.
2)Download and Save Blacklight to your desktop (choose "I ACCEPT" then click "DOWNLOAD" on the website).

Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement, click > "Scan" then > "Next".

You'll see a list of all items found. There will also be a log on your desktop with the name "fsbl.xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxxxxxxxxx stand for numbers).

Copy and paste this log in your next reply. Don't choose the rename option yet! I want to see the log first, because legitimate items can also be present there, such as "wbemtest.exe"

3)Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
4)Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on DSS.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txtin your next reply.
Extra Note: When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so. Also, it may happen that your Antivirus flags DSS as suspicious. Please allow the Deckard's System Scanner to run and don't let your Antivirus delete it. (In this case, it may be better to temporary disable your Antivirus)

The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modfying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot preform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.

Backing Up Your Registry
  • Go Here and download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  • Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  • Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  • Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  • Press OK
  • Press YES to create the folder.
Registry Modifications

Open Notepad, and copy the contents of the following box to a new file.

Save it as fix.reg
Save as type: "All files"
Save it to your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Go to your desktop and double-click "fix.reg" and merge the infomation with the registry.
The above Registry file was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

You should now be able to boot into safe mode.

Download GMER from here:
http://www.gmer.net/files.php

Unzip it to the desktop.

Now please reboot into safe mode.

Open GMER and click on the Rootkit tab.
Make sure all the boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for ‘Show All’.
Click on Scan.
When the scan has run click Copy and paste the results into a notepad file and save it to your desktop.

In your next reply post the GMER results, and a fresh HJT Log.

Hello again August_H,

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

1)Open notepad and copy and paste the following code box in it starting with @echo off

@Echo
sc stop core
sc delete core
attrib -s -r -h "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.sys"
del /q "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.sys"
attrib -s -r -h "C:\Program Files\Common Files\ufrr*.*"
rd /q /s "C:\Program Files\Common Files\ufrr"
attrib -s -r -h "C:\WINDOWS\ufrr*.*"
rd /q /s "C:\WINDOWS\ufrr"
attrib -s -r -h "C:\WINDOWS\QXVndXN0*.*"
rd /q /s "C:\WINDOWS\QXVndXN0"
quit

Save this as fix.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this:Posted Image
(In case you are unsure how to create a bat file, take a look here with screenshots.)

* Reboot into Safe Mode: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Windows Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

Once in Safe mode, doubleclick fix.bat you created previously.
The data needed then should be merged.
Then please boot back to normal Windows.

2)Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.
  • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a fresh HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Hi again,

I had some trouble following your directions tonight. First, I found that the computer would once again not boot in safe mode. I could do it last night right after running your FIX.REG, but since last night's session, the safeboot part of the registry had already gotten re-corrupted. So I ran your FIX.REG from last night again, and then I could boot into safe mode.

I then ran your FIX.BAT but while running it, I kept an eye on the messages in the DOS window and didn't like the looks of them. So I added a PAUSE command before QUIT in FIX.BAT and ran it again so that I could copy the contents of the DOS window into a Notebook file and show them to you. Here they are:

Messages in DOS window while running FIX.BAT:

ECHO is on.

Don't know if this is what you expected, but I thought you should see it.

I then ran Combofix and a fresh HJT scan as per instructions. Logs below.

Hello again,
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on DSS.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy (CTRL+A and then CTRL+C) and paste (CTRL+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Also please give me an update on any issues you still are having and how the computer is running in general.

MoNsTeReNeRgY22,

Update on how computer is running. Definite signs of progress!

* All popups appear to be gone.

* Windows Update and Security Center are back up and running.

* I can now install AVG. Just for kicks I did a scan with it. It found the Bagle virus and the Downloader Trojan, both in directories where your apps had quarantined them. Unfortunately it then deleted them without asking my permission; hope that's okay.

Issues still remaining:

* Safe Mode is broken again.

* Still can't run Panda ActiveScan.

DSS created a main.txt but no extra.txt. See below:

Hey August_H,
I'm glad to hear that all your pop ups appear to be gone and that Windows Update and Security Center are back up and running!
Its also a good thing that AVG AS deleted the items in quarantine, that is always a good thing.
For your ActiveX not working, I am researching that right now and I will get back to you ASAP.

One thing I do notce in your log though, is that you are running Enigma's SpyHunter.
SpyHunter is on the list of Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products which can be found HERE
I reccomend uninstalling it.

Please try booting in and out of safe mode now just to make sure your keys stay stable.

Ran the above FIX.REG and Safe Mode now seems to work consistently. :whistling:

Except for that pesky ActiveX problem, all seems to be well.
