"Safe mode with networking" will allow you to connect to the internet.

Yes, with Add or Remove Programs.

It's 7:30 PM here.

Try this REPAIR to your installation of XP. This procedure will not damage or change your current files or settings...it will just repair or replace damaged system files. You will be asked for your Installation CD and may be asked for your product key. Follow the instructions carefully...print them out if you can.

Hi Wannabe
I have the winxp pro cd. I tried to do the repair as per your link.
Inserted the cd and hit retart. The pc does not recognise the cd. Booted up normally and just froze.
Think I shall try and remove the norton in safe mode, along with spysweeper etc. I dont have a firewall anymore as ZA has been disabled. The router firewall should suffuce i hope.
shall keep you informed..
Thanks for your help

Hi wannabe

well.. found it difficult to get into safe mode.. but i did manage to remove norton, and spysweeper. ( at least think i removed them). message came up to start windows normally!!. after which time,.. after several times of powering off and on.. i finally see windows starts normally and freezes almost immediately.. ( the pointer stays frozen)
What happens now?
Unfortunately i do not have a backup of the my documents folder. If i have to scrap the computer.. will I be able to recover the contents of the hard drive?.. would I be able to do it myself with the very limited knowledge I have of computers.. or would I need to get a specialist?

As far as the software goes, I have all the original discs, so that wont be a problem in installing the programs in this computer that I am using.
Cant believe that what started out as a small problem.. has escalated to this extent.. but suppose it serves me right for procrastinating in doing the back up. ( i even bought a new 250GB external HD 2 weeks ago.

any other ideas that I can try?

Thanks for your help

hi wannabe

I managed to change the boot order to cd rom.. put the xp pro cd in drive and restarted.. however, when i get the first screen after pressing any key to start. it comes up with Trap00006...... Exception...
and then a load of numbers/figures etc.
and thats it.. the cursor blinks at the top left corner of screen.
I have no idea to proceed after that.. there is no setup screen etc.

What else can I do?.. what other choices/avenues to try..... any ideas? or is the computer past its sell by date.. lol ( I dont know why i laugh.. seems i have lost all my important files, photos( of grandkids etc.. I am an old boy.. very)).. but am willing to try anything.

Would be grateful for your help

Thanks

Is your external hard drive connected? Does it show in "My Computer" while in Safe Mode?

I have not connected the external hard drive,, should I try and connect it?
btw, I tried to do a sfc /scannow. It asked for the windows disk.. insertd the win pro cd.. the screen that came up was a windows type screen giving me choices re windows installation etc.. and then the pc froze. It seems that each time i try to do something after windows boots up ( which takes a lon long tome.. the mouse pointer just freezes, so I have to power off and on again.

please let me know about the external HD.
Thanks

Let's hook the external HDD up and see if it's visible in Safe Mode. It would be nice to get the data off the drive so we could get serious about making this thing run,,, :whistling:

Boot into safe mode, THEN connect the external drive...see if Windows will even detect it in Safe Mode.

See if you can open the drive from "My Computer". If you can, create a folder named backups in it and see if you can Copy/Paste the contents of you "My Documents" folder into it. Con't try to copy the whole folder over, just the contents. The same goes with your "My Pictures" folder. You may have to copy across a handful of files at a time to keep from hanging the machine...even in Safe Mode.

If you can't open the drive from "My Computer", try installing the hardware for it and give it another go.
