I don't have Thunderbird, but you may have to go to your GMail account, select All, then click the Mark button and select as Unread. Then see if you can get your GMail imported with the TB tool.

Thunderbird supports using POP and IMAP mail servers for fetching/reading new messages.

Gmail supports POP access through Thunderbird but only for new mail only. Therefore any mail you have in your Gmail account won't be picked up by Thunderbird.

Neil: Didn't I just say that in my post? All mail in GMail has to be marked unread or go to Settings:

POP Download:
1. Status: POP is enabled for all mail that has arrived since 4:55 pm
Enable POP for all mail (even mail that's already been downloaded)
Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on
Disable POP

Enable POP for all mail should work to download all mail to TB.
