Reset your restore points.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

It's now installed. No viruses.

What's next? I'm toying with the idea of doing a repair install of XP. Any thoughts there?

That's really not my area. How did you install and run AVG in just a few minutes?

I already had it downloaded. Just reinstalled it, and let it do it's thing. Looks like it only did the System Areas Test. I started a complete test. I did this last time it was installed, and had no viruses show up. Maybe it will find something now. I hope I hope!!

Thanks for hanging in there.

Hi again,

Sorry for the delay. Mother's day and all. Went thru the steps you indicated. The only thing found was an Alexa entry in the registry (Ad-Aware).

below is the latest HJT log. I'm thinking that the problem is less of an infection issue at this point, and more of a damage control thing. I did get back some of my desktop control when I applied the following registry changes (based on another thread here):

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run]
"notepad.exe"=-
"notepad2.exe"=-
"winlogon.exe"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

"NoDispBackgroundPage"=-
"NoDispAppearancePage"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

"NoActiveDesktop"=-

"NoThemesTab"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]

Download and install EasyCleaner:
http://personal.inet...rts/ecleane.htm

After installing it check under Settings > Registry tab if the backup
option is checked and if the directory it points to exists.
This should be true by default, but check anyway.

Then click OK and click Registry
Then click Search. When it is done select all the items per color,
(most, if not all should be green) and click Remove.

Reboot when you are done and let us know how it goes.

Sorry, it would not install. I've been having that problem with other software. Whatever the infection did it caused some kind of problem with the installer. Some install some don't. All of them have problems with creating links on the desktop. Seems like the Wise installer is less affected. Is there a fix for the installer?

Thanks,

I don't have access to START RUN. Part of the problem. I ran it from the task manager though. Nothing to report. It did its thing and ended. Did't say it fixed anything or found any problems.

Hi There,

I think I am all set now. I did a repair install of XP and it seems to have corrected all of the problems with the desktop and control panel. I will rescan with Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D to verify I don't have anything still.

Thanks for your help.
