It appears a Windows Repair will be needed.
Here is a good tutorial on how to do that.

olrik,
i followed the instructions on the link you posted. at the end of the test/install, it said no problems found!! that was in the startup repair section. looked like the others will delete my programs etc, so i stopped there!!

Hey martin,

Apparently I found the wrong 'sort' of repair :)
This topic should explain how to do a vista repair install.
This repair will keep all your personal files and only replace system files.

thanks olrik,
i just looked at the page, and in the first section it states...'"If you have a Anytime Upgrade Vista installation DVD, then you will not be able to do this."
i have that disk. never opened it as i dont know what it does, but i do have it. came with my laptop when i bought it.
i do have the 2 recovery cd's but it sounds like they will not work either, as it came preinstalled with vista sp1.
am i just reading this wrong?

thanks

I think you should be able to use the same CD you used with the Startup Repair.

ok, i managed to remove sp1, and will try to download it, as the disks i have look to be for just a full on restore, not repair!
i will try to find the sp1 download, and see what happens.....fingers crossed.

ok, uninstalled sp1, as per the link.
then restarted and downloaded sp1 again (used the disks i have, said no errors again).
opened my aircard program, it connected.
opened aol, soon as it tries to connect, bsod.
this is the error that appears on the desktop.

still no able to launch windows security center. when i click to open, i get

"the security center service cannot be started"

i also tried to blow off the cpu with the special compressed air, as the last time i did that aol would run. not this time though, so i guess it was a fluke last time....

any other ideas guys n gals?
i am really trying to avoid a full reinstall of vista, as i have a few programs that will require me to get a new code to unlock a couple of programs i have, accounting etc.
also, i wasn't 110% sure it was software and not hardware, thus making it a moot point anyway!
any other suggestions before the recovery disk gets put to its intended use?

many thanks

Hey martin,

I'm sorry about my slow response this time. The topic got drowned in some topic replies. (In my email)
I'm really starting to get low on ideas. Another idea that springs to mind is re-installing AOL, which does come up as quite a long shot.

I'll give this another good read-through and see if I missed anything.

Hello leftlanetruckin...

This really sounds like a driver incompatibility issue.

Download and run WinAudit on the machine. Save a report as outlined in this Tutorial and attach it to your next reply...you may have to zip the file to attach it.
