You may want to print out these instructions or save them to your desktop as a text file with Notepad because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
  • Prepare CWShredder for use:
    • Download CWShredder.
    • Save CWShredder.exe to a convenient location.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
  • Prepare AboutBuster for use:
    • Download AboutBuster.
    • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
    • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
    • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
    • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update".
    • You should not run the program yet so click "Exit".
  • Prepare cwsserviceremove.reg for use:
    • Download cwsserviceremove.zip.
    • Unzip the contents of cwsserviceremove.zip (cwsserviceremove.reg) to your desktop.
    • Please do not do anything with it yet.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.
To return to normal mode just restart your computer as you normally would.
  • Run CWShredder:
    • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
    • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
    • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
    • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
  • Remove the offending service:
    • Double-click on cwsserviceremove.reg you downloaded earlier.
    • When it asks you to merge the information to the registry click "Yes".
  • Run AboutBuster and save the logs:
    • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
    • Click OK at the directions prompt.
    • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
    • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
    • It will begin to your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
    • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I need a copy of it.
  • Clean out temporary files:
    • Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
    • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
    • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
    • Click "OK" to remove them.
    • Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.
  • Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.
  • Free TrendMicro Housecall scan:
    • Vist the TrendMicro Housecall website.
    • Select your country from the drop-down list and click "Go".
    • Choose "Yes" at the ActiveX Security Warning prompt.
    • Please wait while the Housecall engine is updated.
    • Select the drives to be scanned by placing a check in their respective boxes.
    • Check the "Auto Clean" box.
    • Click "SCAN" in order to begin scanning your system.
    • Please be patient while Housecall scans your system for malicious files.
    • If not auto-cleaned, remove anything it finds.
    • Click "Close" to exit the Housecall scanner.
    • Choose "Yes" at the HouseCall message prompt.
  • Prepare your reply:
    • Please post a fresh HijackThis log
    • Please post the AboutBuster log.
    • Please note any complications you had.

OK, we need to do this the long way.

The first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:

Getservices.zip

Extract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post.

Please make sure your version of About:Buster is updated before beginning. Also, please make sure you have updated Ad-aware SE as well.
  • Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for "C:\WINDOWS\iekk.exe" . If you find the file, click on it, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.
  • Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit OK.
  • Scroll down and find the service called "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper".
  • When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows.
  • Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\xcbqh.dll/sp.html#44768

    O23 - Service: Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper ( 11Fßä#·ºÄÖ`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\crar.exe (file missing)

  • Reboot into Safe Mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?, and delete the following files:

    C:\WINDOWS\crho32.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\xcbqh.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\crar.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\sixtypopsix.exe

    C:\WINDOWS\appia.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\msmw.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\d3gc.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\atlea.exe

  • Run HiJackThis. Click on "None of the above, just start the program". Now, click on the "Config" button (bottom right), then click on "Misc Tools", then click on "Delete an NT Service" a window will pop up. Enter the below item into that field (copy and paste):

    Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper

    Click ok.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES.

  • Run About:Buster & Ad-aware SE that you updated earlier in this fix. Please run them one at a time, not concurrently.
  • Two files (Possibly three) were also deleted from your computer and need to be replaced.
    • control.exe - Go to Merijn Files (control) and download the version of control.exe for your operating system. If you are running Windows 2000, copy it to c:\winnt\system32\. For Windows XP, copy it to c:\windows\system32\.
    • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
    • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy)
  • Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.

A couple of notes:
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper could not be found in any of the steps.

Could not delete "C:\WINDOWS\sixtypopsix.exe" (it wasn't there)

When deleting crho32.dll and xcbqh.dll I noticed there were also .exe files with corresponding names. Should these have been deleted also?

When I tried to download the "Hoster" the web page could not be found.

Thanks a million for your help. This has been annoying me for over a week now.

OK, let's try this again. Delete the old reg file I had ytou download & re-download the new one as the instructions tell you to.

Nope we're using the online virus scans as a "second opinion" if you will. Norton being what got you here in the first place. :tazz:

OK, this is being incredibly persistent! Let's try & get that service killed - I think that must be what we're getting hung up on.

he first thing I need you to do is download the file from here:

ServiceFilter.zip - Get list of XP/2000/NT Services

Extract the zip file to your C: drive. Once it is extracted there will be a directory on your C: drive called ServiceFilter. Inside the C:\ServiceFilter directory will be a file called ServiceFilter.vbs. Simply double-click on the ServiceFilter.vbs. When the script finishes a wordpad document should open with the unknown services listed in it.

If the script could not access wordpad then you will see a message box telling you so. In that case you need to open POST_THIS.TXT by double-clicking it and pasting the contents as a reply to this topic. Please provide a brand new hijackthis log as well in this reply.

The script did not recognize the services listed below.
This does not mean that they are a problem.

To copy the entire contents of this document for posting:
At the top of this window click "Edit" then "Select All"
Next click "Edit" again then "Copy"
Now right click in the forum post box then click "Paste"

OK, I think perhaps your protection programs are undermining our fix.

Here's what we're going to do..

1) Disconnect your computer from the Internet. Yank the cord if need be.

2) Disable Norton. Turn it completely off. Disable anything else you may have running to protect your pc - I don't see anything in the log, but you would know best!

3) Now let's run the fix again:

Let's see how this works.

results from Panda Scan
infected - 202
disinfected - 16

I go through all the steps and get to the point of rebooting in normal mode. Then I reconnect to the internet in order to do the Panda Scan (It still won't open the TrendMicro Housecall page). My home page is back to google.com which is what it is supposed to be. However after staying connected for a minute or two everything goes screwy again. Homepage is changed back to "about:blank"
