My girlfriend's father has a Dell Inspiron 6400 that now has a blank screen with a blinking cursor anytime you try to boot it up. Yesterday at dinner he mentioned that he might need some help with his computer (I spent 9 years at Cisco as an SE so everything thinks I know everything about anything to do with PCs)...he initially said he was just reading email when the computer started acting up.

I could get MediaDirect to run (I think this is installed on a seperate partition) so I think his hard drive is OK...

We found his reinstallation disk and I was able to run it, but he couldn't find his administrator password so couldn't get into the recovery console. He was going to look elsewhere for the password.

At that point he mentioned that right before the issue started he had entered two of his credit cards (including the 3 digits from the back) into a screen that said it was going to help fix his computer and that neither one of them had "worked". He said he watched as all his icons disappeared from the screen and then a message "hard disk failed" flashed on the lower righthand corner of the screen and now all he gets is the blinking cursor.

He said that the only credit card they would accept was a Visa if that helps narrow down what the problem might be. I told him to immediately call his credit card companies and let them know what happened...

I now know what the administrator password is and was going to try the instructions given on the following thread later today and see if that gets me anywhere.

http://www.geekstogo...winxp-recovery/

If that's not the correct thing to do please let me know.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!!! Of course he has no backups of anything on the computer...if there is a way to copy his documents and pictures onto a flash drive before attempting any fixes that info would be most helpful....

Hi, frobey! My nick name is CompCav and I will be assisting you with your Malware/Security problems. Please make sure you read all of the instructions and fixes thoroughly before continuing with them. If you have any questions or you are unsure about anything, just ask and I will help you out. :)

If you have resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please let me know so that this topic can be closed.

Please make sure you are saving and printing the instructions out prior to each fix, this way you will have them on hand just in case you are unable to access this site. One of the steps I will be asking you to do requires you to boot into Safe Mode and this process will be much easier for you to perform if the instructions are printed out for you to follow.

If you are ready to get started, please review and follow these guidelines so that we resolve your issues in a timely and effective manner:
  • Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post.
  • Please make sure to carefully read any instructions that I give you. Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
  • These instructions have been specifically tailored to your computer and the issues you are experiencing with your computer. These instructions are not suitable for any other computer, even if the issues are fairly similar.
  • Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. However, the one thing that you should always do, is to make sure your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
  • Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Just do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file inside your post and submit.
  • You must reply within four days failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
  • Please do not PM me directly for help. If you have any questions, post them in this topic. PM me only if I have not responded to your last post in 2 days.
  • Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to ultimately reformat your hard drive and reinstall the operating system.
Don't worry, this only happens in severe cases, but it sadly does happen. Please have the software and storage media for backing up your data available.

Step 1.

You have done the right thing in getting his credit card companies notified. He will probably need a new card since the crooks will be hitting it as much as they can.

Step 2.

You can do a back up of key files:

Here is a guide for backing up your data:

http://www.geekstogo...over-your-data/

Step 3.

Here is that process in step by step form with links to the files:

OK lets go in outside of windows. We will need to create a CD and additionally use a USB drive

Please print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing

  • Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
  • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
  • Download List Parts and save it to the flash drive also.
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)
  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  • Insert the USB with FRST
  • Locate the flash drive with FRST and double click
  • The tool will start to run.
    Posted Image
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.
  • Next click List Parts and then click Scan
  • It will make a log Results.txt on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Step 4.

Please post:
FRST.txt
Results.txt

Hi, thanks so much for the info....I was able to boot to Puppy linux and copy all of his important files to my zip drive.

Here are the results of the two scans you asked me to run. He has now allowed me to bring the laptop home so it should be easier to work with.

He canceled both of his credit cards...no one had used them yet...

Thanks!!!

Frank

Step 1.

Download the enclosed file.
Attached File  fixlist.txt   999bytes   77 downloads
Save it in the USB drive.

Insert the USB drive into the ailing computer. Run FRST as you did before, except that this time around click on the Fix button.

The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt) please post it it your reply.

Step 2.

Attempt to boot in Normal Mode. If successful, run RogueKiller as follows:

  • Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop.
  • Quit all programs
  • Start RogueKiller.exe.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Click on Scan
  • Note: If RogueKiller will not run please try it several times, if it still does not run rename it winlogon.com and try it several times.
Posted Image
  • Wait for the end of the scan.
  • The report has been created on the desktop.
  • Click on the Delete button.
Posted Image
  • The report has been created on the desktop.

  • Next click on ShortcutsFix

    Posted Image
  • The report has been created on the desktop.

Please post:

All RKreport.txt text files located on your desktop.

Step 3.

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:

Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop * IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. This infection will require a reboot to correct so make sure these are turned off and will not turn back on at reboot. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

    Posted Image
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
    Posted Image
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    Posted Image
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions
3. If you cannot connect to the internet or have other issues after ComboFix completes, simply reboot the computer.

Step 4.

Please let me know it it did not boot up.

If it did please post:

Fixlog.txt
All RKreport.txt files
ComboFix.txt

Also please give me an update on how the computer is performing and what issues remain.

I copied fixlist.txt to my flashdrive, booted the ailing computer using OLTP and then ran FRST. After it completed I ran "Fix". I then removed all media and tried to reboot the ailing computer normally. It did not boot and came up with the blinking cursor.

Here are the results of fixlog.txt

Please download MBRFix. Save and extract its contents to the desktop. Once extracted, there will be three files in the folder. Copy just the MBRFix.exe application to the USB drive.

Open notepad (Start =>All Programs => Accessories => Notepad). Please copy the entire contents of the code box below. (To do this highlight the contents of the box, right click on it and select copy. Right-click in the open notepad and select Paste). Save it on the flashdrive as fixlist.txt

SaveMbr: Drive=0

Now reboot with the CD again and locate FRST, double click it.
Run FRST and press the Fix button just once and wait.

The tool will make a log on the flashdrive (Fixlog.txt) please post its contents in your reply. It will also produce another file, MBRDUMP.txt, on the flash drive that although it may look a text file, it is a hex file. You must attach this report on your reply instead of posting its contents.

Ran FRST, fixlog.txt is shown below

Fix result of Farbar Recovery Tool (FRST written by Farbar) (x86) Version: 23-11-2012

I tried to attach the MBRdump.txt file but my MSE did not allow me to do this saying "You don't have permission" and then quarantined the file and said it contained TROJAN:DOS/Alureon.L. I then restored the file and was able to attach it to this reply....

Just for giggles, I also tried to boot the ailing computer but just got blinking cursor.

Thanks again.

We will first start with replacing the master boot record since it is infected.

  • Download NTBR_CD by noahdfear.
  • Extract its contents to the desktop.
  • Once extracted, open the NTBR_CD folder and click on the BurnItCD application.
  • Insert a blank CD when prompted. The .iso image will be burned to the CD.
  • Boot the computer with the CD you just burned and follow the prompts.
  • Press Enter for English.
  • At the menu type 1 to select MBRWORK then hit Enter

This screen will show the hard drive configuration.
    Posted Image
  • Type 5 to Install standard MBR code then hit Enter
  • Type 1 to select Standard then hit Enter
  • Type Y then hit Enter to confirm
  • Type E then hit Enter to exit
  • Back at the menu, type 6 to Quit.
  • Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart the machine.
  • Eject the CD upon restart and boot normally.

Run the RogueKiller and ComboFix instructions I posted in post #4. Please post the logs in your next reply.

CompCav, YOU ROCK!!!!!

I followed your instructions with NTBR, ran Roguekiller and Combofix and it appears that the laptop and all of its contents are back!!!!

I've looked at many of his programs and they all seem to be working, are there any specific ones that I should try that might cause problems and need "fixing" before I return the laptop to him?

One issue that I've seen is that his wireless connection doesn't seem to be working, it can see my router but not connect to it....this may have been an issue before the laptop was infected, I've got a call into him to ask. I know the wireless works and I'm putting in the correct key since my laptop is using that connection...

The laptop seems to be performing quite well, I've turned his antivirus and firewall back on. I'm purchasing a copy of Malwarebytes for him to install so hopefully this will keep this from occurring again. I've also purchased a 32GB flash drive so we can start backing up his files...

Here are the results of the Roguekiller logs...I couldn't find the combifix log, I guess it didn't save a copy to the desktop (it did come up in notepad and I did read it but closed it down before copying it....sorry about that.

Frank

  • Select Scan All Users
  • Select Lop Check and Purity Check
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start

    svchost.exe
    winsock.*
    /md5stop
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /rs
    hklm\software\clients\startmenuinternet|command /64 /rs
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

Step 1.

Uninstall the following programs, they are out of date, resource hogs, or will make final cleanup incomplete:

Java™ 6 Update 24
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java Auto Updater
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
(This can be reinstalled after the fix but if you add MalwareBytes' later it is redundant)
McAfee Security Scan Plus (Not the main AV, this installs with Adobe products and is onf limited use and consumes resources)
Norton Security Scan
