Ok lets do this and see if it helps.

Open a command prompt and paste the contents of the code box below to simplify the check disk process hit enter for vista/7 users run this command from elevated command prompt.

CMD /C ECHO Y|CHKDSK C: /r | SHUTDOWN /R /T 30

This will boot your machine into A checkdisk it will take some time so allow it to finish.

After the checkdisk...........

Download the All in one Repair Tool Run the program vista/win 7 users please right click and run as admin. Go to step 4 and create a backup of your registry this tool involves changing registry keys and it is just a good idea to bak it up.Now go to the start repairs tab and run it with the following boxes checked. When running this tool disable your antivirus.

Reset Registry Permissions
Reset File Permissions
Register System Files
Repair WMI
Repair Internet Explorer
Repair MDAV/MS Jet
Repair Hosts Files
Remove Policies Set By Infections
Repair Winsock & Dns Cache
Repair Proxy Settings
Repair Windows Updates
Set Windows Services To DEfault Startup
Repair MSI (Windows Installer)

Reboot the machine after then check updates and tell me if the machine is running any better.

I did not get an installationdisc with this laptop, so I followed the steps you described for this situation. However, when I entered the prompt, it said something like "the system repairservice cannot be started" (this is my own translation as it was stated in Dutch).....

Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 (X64)

Then perform a repair install with the disk.

Hi, unfortuately I don't have a disc, so I cannot perform a repair install.
Also, I 'm on Vista home premium, so I don't think I will be able to install the Win 7 servicepack, right?

I really appreciate all your effort btw!

OOps for some reason I was thinking you were on win 7. :whistling:

Ok lets try this please.

Clear all of your restore points and create a new one.
To do this turn system restore off reboot.
Turn it back on and reboot again.
http://windows.micro...store-on-or-off

Ok Now open your system restore and create another one.

http://www.howtogeek...system-restore/

Reboot the machine again.

After the reboot then see if you r system restore works by going to the first restore point you created just a bit ago.

If the system restore works and only if it works.

Create another restore point reboot.

I would then like you to un-install SP2.You will need to use method one or three from the link below.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948537

Go to the site below and then choose your service pack language and re-install sp2
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=16468

http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=15278

Then reboot your machine and check for updates.Hopefully this will solve the issue.

If for some reason the sp2 will not install then do a system restore to the third point that you created.

~~Edited for link.~~

The system restore works, but strangely enough there is no Windows Service Pack found under "installed upates". The only service pack that is mentiuoned is a Microsoft Office 2007 SP2.
When I check the system area of my control panel ,it nevertheless says that SP 2 is installed.
