Windows XP sp3. I recently bought a new modem and after being "helped" by my cable provider, I must sign onto Facebook, my G-mail, and Yahoo everytime I visit their sites. I have checked the box that says "Remember Me" and it has no effect. The Help desk had me go into some Advanced Internet Setting that I don't recall and I believe this may be the issue. Help please! :surrender:

This is a caching/offline files issue more than likely, in which I'd like you to state which browser you are using. If internet explorer, follow the below steps:
  • Now open your Start Menu and go into your Control Panel
  • Once in your Control Panel go to Internet Options (might want to make the 'View by:' set to small)
  • In this window, please go to the Advanced tab.
  • On this tab, let's click the following; Reset...
  • Don't check the box on the next page, then click 'Reset' at the bottom
  • Once this little window (Reset Internet Explorer Settings) puts check boxes next to all 3 items, click 'Close'
  • This will exit the Internet Options, please reopen it via Control Panel
  • Let's verify a few settings, listed below;
  • Go to the tab 'Connections' and click on 'LAN Settings'. Unless using a proxy, verify 'Automatically detect settings' checkbox is checked and nothing else is entered.
  • Go back to the 'General' tab now and in the 'Browsing History' select 'Delete' and then check all the boxes accept 'Form Data' and 'Passwords'. Then hit 'Delete' at the bottom. Give this a minute to run.
  • Make sure to also set the 'Homepage' to a known page (www.Google.com for instance) while on the 'General' tab.
Also are you consistently running a cleaner, such as CCleaner or TFC? That will also cause this.

PhrantiQ I am running IE. In your post you indicated "■Go back to the 'General' tab now and in the 'Browsing History' select 'Delete' and then check all the boxes accept 'Form Data' and 'Passwords'. Then hit 'Delete' at the bottom. Give this a minute to run"

Did you mean "accept" as in check these boxes, or "Except" as in do not check these boxes.

Thanks!

Well shoot, you caught me on a 'typo' or miss-usage of the word except. Sorry about that, was writing that up in a bit of a hurry earlier. Please do NOT check those boxes, as I meant EXCEPT. Thank you for pointing it out as well.

Here is where I am now. I now have a new icon on my Toolbar "Web Slice Gallery. When I go to Facebook I am already logged inn and I am unable to log out - I can see that I have new posts but cannot open them. When I go to Yahoo and move my cursor near the "Mail" button - the button disappears and the message "Yahoo encountered a problem when trying to load" Suggestions please.

Interesting. Please do the following (I'm counting my first post as STEP ONE, so I will start with STEP TWO and on from here).

STEP TWO: MiniToolBox Repairs & Intel Gathering
  • At this point and time I'd like you to get the utility MiniToolBox and run it with the following checked items.
    • Flush DNS
    • Reset IE Proxy Settings
    • Reset FF Proxy Settings
    • List content of Hosts
    • List Installed Programs
    • List Devices
    • Only-Problems (leave it checked)
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory Size

After you've selected just the above items, please then hit GO. Once it's done running, which normally doesn't take too long, it will have a text or log file pop up. Please copy/paste that into a reply.
STEP THREE: Temp File Cleaner
As a good rule of thumb, I like to get rid of temp/junk files off any and all systems I work on. Reason being that I've seen some build up of caches and junk files cause all sorts of chaos on multiple occasions, so why not just take a few minutes to clean the PC up.However before you download and run the program, please make sure you save all work and close out of all programs accept your browser (which also will need to be closed down after the download, before running the program).

Now that we've saved and closed out of all your applications/programs, please download Temp File Cleaner (TFC). Once that is done, close out of all your open applications/programs and then please 'Right Click' and select Run As Administrator from the Context Menu. Please let this run, uninterrupted. Once it's finished, it may ask you to reboot your machine - If it does, please allow it to reboot at this time and after Windows loads back up move on to the next step. If it does not require a reboot, please move on to the next step now. However please take note of the red number, displaying amount of removals, and post it in a reply.

Well your Hosts file sure has a lot of entries, I'd recommend we get rid of that and have it replaced. Beyond that here are my areas of notification/concern upon a brief scan through your post.

WARNING: Junkware & Adware
I've noticed a few junk/ad-ware installations. As these are handled by our Malware Removal Experts/Staff in a different section, we will need you to head over there for removals. However let me list a few of the concerns in sections real fast...

Adware and Junkware:
WeatherBug (Version: 7.0.0.11)
Easy Internet Sign-up (Version: FE UI-3.0.0.1106)
Delta Chrome Toolbar
Delta toolbar (Version: 1.8.24.6)
YTD Toolbar v6.5 (Version: 6.5)
BitGuard (Possible malicious software, depending on a few factors which the experts will be able to determine)
WARNING: Multiple Security Software
I know you mentioned removing AVG and such, however want to point it out regardless... Having more than one antivirus will not increase your security, it will likely do the exact opposite. The reason for this is due to the programs conflicting with one another, not to mention false positives generated from these possible conflicts. So please remove all but one at this time. So please make sure to remove all AVG items (if you keep Avast, which I recommend). WARNING: Out Of Date Software
  • It is key to keep your Java, Adobe Flash and Adobe Reader up to date if you have them installed. Your Java for instance is on update 25, but we are in the 40's now... Pretty large gap. Updates fix security exploits, which is key to remaining secure and keep things running smooth. Below are direct links to the sites to download the latest versions for each of these programs.
    • Adobe Reader
    • Please be sure to uncheck the box for 'Install McAfee Security Scan Plus'.
    • Once installed read the section below for 'Making Adobe Reader/Acrobat Safer'
  • Adobe Flash
    • Please be sure to uncheck the box for 'Install McAfee Security Scan Plus'.
  • Java
    • After you start the installation, please uncheck both boxes for 'Install the Ask Toolbar...' and 'Set and keep Ask as my...'.
    • Please read the section below for 'Further Discussion On Java'.

Making Adobe Reader/Acrobat Safer:
  • Adobe Reader and/or Acrobat both have a known exploit in them, in which Adobe updates keep hiding or tweaking but haven't fully taken care of. We can however go ahead and disable the Javascript option and close the door on this exploit, so please follow the below steps to do so:
  • Open your Adobe Reader at this time
  • Select Edit from the menu at top
  • Select Preferences at this time
  • Now click on Javascript on the left side column
  • Uncheck the item 'Enable Acrobat Javascript'
  • Close the program.
NOTE: The same can be done for Foxit, an Adobe Reader alternative, however 'Preferences' is under the 'Tools' menu and it will be 'Enable Javascript Actions' that you need to uncheck.
Further Discussion On Java: Guides to disable Java and re-enable only when you need it (recommended if you must have it installed):
