None of my shortcuts on my desktop not quick launch on the toolbar respond to my mouse. The system also does not respond to the keyboard. I cannot bring up task manager. I had replaced windows 7 firewall with Comodo and was in the process of installing AVG when the problem started. I can start in safe mode but cannot delete AVG nor Comodo from safe start. I system restore apparently was not turned one either. Are there any reasonable options other than repair or reinstall the OS. I am using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit

Gday mlwjackson, welcome back.
If you can run in Safe Mode with networking, download the AVG Removal Tool and save to the Desktop.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode, without networking.
Turn on System Restore.
Run the AVG Removal Tool.
When done, restart in normal mode.

I was able to remove AVG but it did not resolve the problem. The computer is nearly new with nothing critical loaded. I'm tempted to just wipe it and do a clean install.

I would wipe it and start over. Leave out Comodo and AVG, stay with the Windows 7 firewall and go with Microsoft Security Essentials, at least for awhile. See how that goes.
