and if there is still issues maybe the install disk?

Ok. There is no recovery partition so the best that can be done is to clean up the computer and we can create new user accounts and delete the old ones to personalize this computer for your Mom. When we are done cleaning the system up, we will focus on removing programs you don't need and installing ones you do need.

Please do as follows:

Click here and begin with Step 2 by downloading OTL and running the tool. Then follow the instructions to start a new thread in the Virus, Spyware, Malware Removal forum and post the logs in the new thread.

I'll be watching for your new topic.

just updated my mom's pc that we put so much time into and it would not start up after reboot. had to use last known good config. just to get to log on screen.i wonder if the computer needs more tinkering.checking for updates again just to see what pops up. probably wont install them. any advice?

Hi Jeff,

Yesterday was Patch Tuesday. Patch Tuesday occurs on the second Tuesday of each month in North America, on which Microsoft regularly releases security patches. I have a feeling that an update triggered the crash that the computer experienced.

Since you executed the Last Known Good Configuration option how is the system running?

At this time, click on your Start VISTAORB.jpg and type windows update into your Start Search field.
  • Click on Windows Update in the list.
  • Click on Change Settings.
  • Under Important Updates, click on the drop arrow to the far right and choose Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.
  • Click OK at the bottom of the window.
Now the updates will download, but will not install unless you select and allow them to.

Once you have changed the settings, reboot the computer. Next, go back to Windows Updates and click on View installed updates in the left side panel. Write down the KB number (KB915597 < example) for the ones that had installed and if they failed or were successful.

In the meantime, I'll check around to see if anyone else had any trouble with the updates released by Microsoft for Vista systems.

computer on now i had to go with last known good configuration again the first time i booted it up.

i had to use last known config a bunch of times just to get to a log on screan yesterday and once this morning.

but today it's going to directly to log on screen after reboot like it should.

these are yesterdays updates.

Did you get the settings changed in Windows Update as I instructed above?

For now, let the updates download then choose one at a time to install. That way if this happens again, you have an idea which update may have caused the problem.

Also, follow the guide in the link below to disable Windows updates from searching for drivers that need to be updated:

Let me know if the instructions are confusing and I will boot up my Vista to create and provide exact instructions.
