Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction to solve this problem.

 

My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

 

I replaced my motherboard back in June and was soon after presented with the Build 7601 error message shown above and a lack of Windows updates.

Via various forums I found a way to rectify this problem (via the slui settings) and all has been working perfectly since then ... until this morning.

 

Turned on my PC and was presented with this message again in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

 

So I went back into the slui settings and did the same as last time;

C Drive

Windows

System 32

Right Click on slui

Properties Tab

Security Tab

Advanced

Owner Tab

Edit

Click on user account then OK

Then back into slui to tick the boxes giving myself full control of windows.

 

But this time the message remains.

 

In control panel - systems and security - system, the incorrect product id key for the OS is shown. In Speccy the correct key is shown.

When I click on the options to Activate Windows or to Change the Product Key there is no response.

 

I've carried out various malware, adware, virus and root scans along with CCleaner - all show as negative.

 

I tried to do a safe reinstall of my Windows 7 disc in order to put the correct key back into the system, but the reinstall didn't seem to be carried out - ie I wasn't asked to re-type my ID key in and the PC restarted itself in my absence .

 

Windows updates etc appear to be working correctly, as is the PC generally - just the annoying message for no reason.

 

Before carrying out a full system re-install (which I really don't want to do if I can avoid it), any ideas?

OK, managed to rectify the issue.

 

For the info of anyone else who is receiving the Buid 7601 message and have a genuine copy of the Windows 7 OS installed, here's what to do.

Click on Start  and type in slmgr.vbs/dlv

 

A screen will appear with all of the details of your OS - licence info, ID keys etc etc. Check that this is showing the correct ID for your copy. Close window.

 

Next:

 

Start > cmd and right click on cmd > run as administrator

Now, when the window opens type in SLMGR -REARM then enter

Now restart your PC and the message should have disappeared.

 

Not sure why the message appeared etc in the first place, but all back to normal now.

That does not solve the problem, it only delays it for 30 days. You can do that up to 6 times then it will no longer work.

 

To fix it, you need to do a phone activation.

This problem surfaced way back in 2012, it was quite common at the time, though why it is happening now I don't know, however to save me some typing have a look at the discussion here on the link below and if you haven't yet run a disk check and a system file check, follow the instructions there for running them.

And there I was feeling all smug that I'd managed to sort myself out. I should have known that all things computerish are never that easy.

 

Yes, of course you're right. I have only managed to get rid of the build error message and given myself some grace time before the inevitible!

In the system info box it says that Windows will try an automatic activation in 2 days, but will not allow me to activate it manually.

 

Plastic Nev, I tried the advice in the link.

Initially the CHKDSK toldme that it couldn't run "because the volume is in use by another process". It then asked if I would like the process to be checked upon system restart. I said yes, restarted and a check was caried out.

I then restarted again, but no change.

 

I then ran a disc scan.

The scan reported that it had found "corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

It then said that the result of this scan could be found in the CBS Logs, but the only CBS log I could find was from a previous scan in October.

 

I'll run a MGADiag test and post the results.

Ztruker, yes it would ... except my ********* pc won't allow me to do that either.

slui.exe 4 doesn't do a thing.

 

I tried a safe re-install of the OS, but after a few hours of this, a message came up saying that the re-install was unable to complete.

 

So all I can think of is a complete re-install of the OS. Deep joy.

 

Unless anyone can suggest an alternative .... like throw the PC out of the window!

I had the same problem and called them. Probaby i`m pretty dum, but they didn`t help me even a bit.

If you can't get the activation window up then you can't do a phone activation, so a clean install is your best bet.
