I bought a new cpu from a friend. After installing it i try to start up but the fans only spin for like a half second. I unplugged all cords and plugged them in and it still didn't work. I replaced the new cpu with my old one and the pc works perfectly. So im lost here.
My specs are :
G31mxp foxconn motherboard
Old cpu : core 2 duo e6550 --- new cpu : core 2 quad q9450
3gb ram
Gtx 550

You may try to clear the CMOS by removing the CMOS battery in the mother board.

 

How to remove and replace the CMOS battery.

 

Did you say it work good with old cpu? but not with new one..?

Core 2 quad need 95 w of power which you need to adjust it in BIOS.

I updated the Bios and yes, the  system works with the old cpu but not the new one. I will try to clear the cmos.

Also with old cpu try to access the bios and try to change settings for cpu to 95 w if possible

How do i change the settings for that. Im in the bios with the old cpu now

 

Edit : I am in the bios in the tab with : "Voltage options", there is an option to choose for the CPU voltage. Is this it?

From website i saw your Mobo supports both Processor.

So i suggest you to flash the bios.. Did you flash it properly? what steps you followed and from where?

How you clear the cmos? Did you fix  the processor properly...?

 

How may slots RAM you have and how many RAM you use?

At first i wanted to flash it with a usb but that didnt work so i downloaded the Foxconn live update and updated my bios like that. If go to my bios right now it says the new bios so i think that worked. I cleared the cmos by taking the steps that were given from your link. I have two RAM slots. 1gb and 2 gb with a total of 3 gb... 

 

What do you mean with fixing the cpu properly? I coudlnt find the way to chaneg the wattage for the cpu but instead found the way the voltage if this helps.

Flashign the BIOS was a good move.   Clearing the CMOS, will set the MB to Default setting so the new CPU would be detecvted and any voltage setting will have been set.   Do not alter them in the BIOS, this is only done if you want to manually overclock the CPU.

 

Please check that the CPU fan plug is securely seated to the CPU fan header on the MB.   Also check the 12V auxiliary power plug has not been dislodged, top left of the CPU socket.

 

Before installing the heatsink, did you completely clean off all traces of the old thermal paste from the top of the CPU and the bottom of the heat sink?

Did you apply new thermal paste before instilling the heat sink?

All the cables are plugged in, i triple checked everything and i didnt apply new thermal paste because im switching my cpu in and out so it would be a waste.

Without TIM present, to transfer heat from the CPU to the heatsink, it will overheat within a couple of seconds or less, then will shut down to protect itself.

You must clean off all traces of thermal paste from the CPU and heatsink, every time.

 

Please reassemble, use the correct amount of TIM, and test.   Hopefully no damage has occurred and the system will Boot OK.
