Hi everyone, I hope someone may be able to shed some light on this problem I'm having as I'm stumped.

 

Every time I hit render in my 3ds Max application, my computer makes a very loud buzzing sound. It only happens while my CPU is under stress because if I change the renderer to iray and set it to GPU only, the sound doesn't happen. It doesn't sound like coil whine or a physical fan problem, it's a very loud distinct buzz, like an alarm.

 

I have had this pc set up for around 3 years now, and had no problems in the past, it just started the other day.

 

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

If it only happens when the CPU is being stressed it might be the CPU fan when it is running at max speed. If you haven't already take the side panel off the case and try to determine where the sound is coming from.

 

Check the follow components.

• CPU fan
• Powersupply
• Hard drive
• Any other fans in your case

Cool thanks Nyser,

 

I went out on a whim and bought a new cpu fan, figured my stock one was prob just not doing the trick anymore with the amount of 3d rendering I do. It hasn't made a sound yet since installing it, before the temperature was raising above 90 degrees celsius, now it sits steadily at around 55 - 60 while rendering... so I will assume it was probably some sort of temperature alarm (if that exists).

 

Hopefully this is the fix and will help anyone in the future.

 

The fan I bought was pretty cheap also, coolermaster hyper 212x.

I thought that might of been the problem I'm glad it was something simple. 90 degrees is very high definitely seems like the CPU cooler wasn't doing it's job, 60 degrees while under stress is pretty good I would be happy with that.

I don't think a temperature alarm exists normally when your CPU hits a certain temperature it will shut down the computer to stop any damage.

 

In regards to what you purchased I can't say much about it but in my experience coolermaster as a brand are quite good I have something similiar to what you purchased and it is still going good after 4-5 years.

FYI, Your MB may have come with a software program like Asus Probe 11, this can set alarms for temp and fan failure.   Most BIOS have some sort of monitoring.

Yep, just looked up my motherboard specs for GA-Z77X-UDH3, it does have a CPU overheating warning.
