Hi

The flash drive already has the ISO on it.

If I open it in file explorer there are 4 directories, BOOT, EFI, SOURCES, & SUPPORT on the drive and 4 files, AUTORUN.INF, BOOTMGR, BOOTMGR,EFI, & SETUP.EXE.

You didn't answer exactly my question but I will assume that you used Rufus to create the bootable flash drive.

 

You need to repeat the task again but this time after running Rufus press the key combination ALT + E (only one time) on the status bar will see briefly the information "dual UEFI/BIOS mode", proceed with the same steps you did before to create the flash drive again.

 

This way the flash drive created will work for both cases when the computer is on UEFI or BIOS mode.

Ok, the export part is what Windows 10 upgrade is trying to do and it also fail... lets try to fix it.
 
type the following commands:

d:
cd boot
attrib -h -r -s BCD
ren BCD BCD.old
Bootrec /rebuildbcd

When it asks you Add the installation to boot list?, press on y followed by Enter and if it succeed, you'll have a The operation completed successfully message. Once you're done, close the command prompt, restart your computer and try to upgrade again.

 

If any of those commands result in error, stop and tell me the error.

The Windows repair media was copied onto a memory stick not a cd.

 

Before I try to enter the commands that you have sent, must I cut a DVD from the memory stick?

I booted up with the memory stick and ran the script as directed. Got the reply that it was successfull, but to Drive L.
When I rebooted the machine, all the items on the desktop had been jumbled up and the Windows Button on the lower left corner of the screen no longer responds.
Please help.

Hi,

 

The commands on post #49 even if they went totally wrong they only affect the boot process of the system and nothing like you describe!

 

The L drive matches the partition where the Windows installation resides, in your case because the drive letters change when in RE mode, so its Ok that bootrec found the OS there.

 

 

The problem you describe happens on the first boot after the change or did Windows start upgrading to a newer version?

Windows tried to upgrade, but the notification I got was that it was unsuccessful. 

 

I have tried to reboot the computer, but it has not corrected the situation.

 

Please help!!!

 

I need the computer in order to carry on with projects on the go.

Windows 10 is still trying to update. Gets to 25% and the reboots.
What I have noticed is that now when the computer reboots it asks which operating system, Windows 10 64 bit or Windows 7.
What will happen if I go with windows 7. Does it mean that I have to reinstall all the programmes again?

Do you remember when you type the command "Bootrec /rebuildbcd" how many Windows installations did it find?

 

If you access the folder Documents, etc. do you see your files?

I am not 100% certain, but I am certain nothing about Win 7 showed up on the screen.

Documents and Settings  "C:\Documents and Settings is not accessible. Access Denied"

Lets revert the steps from post #49, boot the computer from the flash drive and then execute the following commands:

d:
cd boot
attrib -h -r -s BCD
ren BCD BCD.new
xcopy BCD.* e:\
ren BCD.old BCD

Restart to windows and let me know the result.
 
On the root of the flash drive you should find two files named BCD.new and BCD.old please zip them and attach the zip to your post.

Hi

Have just run the the commands in post 58.

Results are as follows

d:
cd boot
attrib -h -r -s BCD  -"file not found"

ren BCD BCD.new - "system cannot find the specified file"
xcopy BCD.* e:\  - "D: BCD.old - 1 file copied"
ren BCD.old BCD - returned to : "D:\Boot"

 

On restart desktop still scrambled, Windows Icon on lower left still does not work, most icons will not open the respective programme.

 

Only found BCD.old on the flashdrive. Copy attached. Had to zip it otherwise could not attach it, not allowed

Can you open the Command Prompt as Administrator and type the command:

bcdedit /enum

Copy & Paste the result to your post please.
