I'm running a Dell dimension 2350, Windows XP...
I logged on and my adwatch from adaware detected about about 20 registry modifications. All of a sudden,.. all of my icons on my destop changed to .lnk files. I'm still able to get on the net,.. but it's one of the only things I can do. All of my EXE files will not execute, and anything I try to download won't open. I get a message stating "Windows cannot open this file. To open, windows needs to know what program created it."I've tried numerous times to start in safe mode and do all sorts of scans but I cant get into anything with a .exe in them.
AVG came up with trojan "java byte/verify", but I can't remove it with AVG,.. and I can't clear the cache files under control panel/java ver.1.3.
I did a scan with ad aware and it came up with about 5 critical objects. I cleared them and I still have the same problem.
I was able to do a hijack this scan,...but I cant find the log, and I cant dbl/right click on the hijack this icon anymore to do another scan.
Executable files will not work!! Please help!! Ad watch is still coming up with about 20 something different processes/ reg. mods.

I think it has something to do with a wrong code in windows itself. Sometimes WinXP refreshes the desktop if you change a name or anything else in the registry. It only does that when it does something big (or at least I only notice it when it does something big). Put in your winXP cd and say to the CD you want to update (if you have the SP 1 cd and downloaded SP2, the cd is useless, unless you format C:, or un-install SP2, I dont know how to uninstall SP2). I hope I helped you with this hint. Remember, if you don't have anything you want to keep on your harddisk, a Format would be the wisest, a fresh install is always better.

*EDIT* --- Huh, you said you can't run .exe's, but hjt is an .exe too :tazz:

Hi Chaze, welcome back.

See if you can get this running:

* Please rightclick this link to download Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved.

I see this is on your computer:
HelpExpress adware program by Alset inc

We realy need to remove it.

It on the account of Ivy.

Let's see if we can at least get the system to run the exe files:

Please RIGHT-CLICK:
this file
and go to Save As (in Internet Explorer it's "Save Target As") in order to download this reg file. Save it to your desktop.

Locate "exefix.reg" on your desktop and double-click it. When asked if you want to merge with the registry, click YES. Wait for the "merged successfully" prompt then follow the rest of the instructions below.

See if you can now open HijackThis. If not, reboot and try again.

Let me known if this helped, or we will work around it.

See thats the problem.
When I dbl click your file, i get the same message stating " windows cannot open this file. To open windows needs to know what program created it.
This is so frustrating.
All of the reg fixes I have downloaded,.. come up with this message.
Please advise. :tazz:
