something really weird is going on......

can this spyware 'copy' things like my earthlink connection icon??? I now have 2 earthlink icons at the bottom of my screen! When I was just at earthlink webmail, my browser got closed and i was not able to sign out of my web mail account. When I opened my broswer again, the two earthlink icons appeared at the bottom of my screen on the taskbar.

And, of course, my browser is constantly being taken over by some ad or a bunch of windows popping up......but i know that spyware dose that. I'm just wondering how those two earthlink icons got there-----should only be one.

well, the second earthlink is gone. no idea what that was. now i have a silver-colored search-type toolbar across the bottom of my screen right above my taskbar. i can close it but it keeps coming back at times.

For some reason we're not making much progress here, they keep coming back. Let's try emptying your temp folder. On the Internet Explorer toolbar, select Tools -> Internet Options..., Select the General Tab, and under the Temporary Internet files heading click the Delete Files button.

Then try running Spybot S&D, fix all items in red, reboot and post a new log.

i did what you said. when i ran spybot it found 148 things and fixed most of them but said there were some that couldnt be fixed until reboot. so i rebooted and scanned again and this time it found 6 things but it only could fix 3. The other 3 that it did not fix were called "peopleonpage". Any idea what that is??

oh my, what a mess I have!!! There is just more and more and more of this spyware on my computer!!!!!!

Since my last log post I went and updated and re-ran Adaware. Spybot. CWShredder, and then rebotted and ran Hijackthis.

There were over 200 things found and fixed/quaranteened!!!!!

That is impossible??????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My computer is still EXACTLY THE SAME as it has been for over a week since the spyware blast4ed my computer!!!!! Th eonly thing different is that now there is a LOT MORE spyware!!!! It still come sup with the "allaboutsearching.com" page which redirects to http://about:blank/; Ads still pop up anytime; the strange icones are still on my desktop; my computer is still horrendously slow; more spyware shows up in my log and results of scans before I 'fix' them that I've never seen before.....etc etc etc


It isn't clean....it is still a mess..........

HI,

This is a living nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been going from one forum to another for the past 10 DAYS trying to get help and NOTHING is helping. Everyone tells me to do the same stuff....run adawre, run spybot, run cwshredder, reboot, use Hijackthis, post log.........

I have been doing this over and over and over and over and over for 10 days........it does not help. They all find things. They all fix what they find. I reboot. And the spyware is right there...........running those things makes absolutely no difference whatsoever in my computer. My computer is exactly the same as it was 10 days ago when the spyware blasted it.

The ONLY things that 'have' changed after running all those dozens and dozens of times is that:

1. Deleting the strange icons that were put on my desktop finally worked. They have not returned the last few times I started my computer.

2. I now am able to click on the things that are in my taskbar at the bottom of my screen, which did not work at first.


That's it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please someone help me get this stuff off of my computer. I am at my wits end.....

My best guess is that you're simply reinfecting yourself. See this excellent and well traveled article:

A frequently heard question is  "how on earth did I get infected with all that spyware in the first place?"

Well, you usually get infected because your security settings are too low.

Here are a number of recommendations that will help tighten them, and which will contribute to making you a less likely victim:

1) Watch what you download!
Many freeware programs, and P2P programs like Grokster, Imesh, Kazaa and others are amongst the most notorious, come with an enormous amount of bundled spyware that will eat system resources, slow down your system, clash with other installed software, or just plain crash your browser or even Windows itself.

2) Go to IE > Tools > Windows Update > Product Updates, and install ALL Security Updates listed.
It's important to always keep current with the latest security fixes from Microsoft.
Install those patches for Internet Explorer, and make sure your installation of Java VM is up-to-date. There are some well known security bugs with Microsoft Java VM which are exploited regularly by browser hijackers.

3) Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.

Now press "Custom Level."

In the ActiveX section, set  the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls)  to  'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to  'disable'. 

Now you will be asked whether you want ActiveX objects to be executed and whether you want software to be installed.
Sites that you know for sure are above suspicion can be moved to the Trusted Zone in Internet Option/security.

So why is activex so dangerous that you have to increase the security for it?
When your browser runs an activex control, it is running an executable program.  It's no different from doubleclicking an exe file on your hard drive.
Would you run just any random file downloaded off a web site without knowing what it is and what it does?

And some more advice:

4) Install Javacool's SpywareBlaster:

It will protect you from all spy/foistware in it's database by blocking installation of their ActiveX objects.

Download and install, download the latest updates,  and you'll see a list of all spyware programs covered by the program  (NOTE: this is NOT spyware found on your computer)
Press "select all",  then "kill all checked", and you're done.
The spyware that you told Spywareblaster to set the "kill bit" for won't be a hazard to you any longer.
Although it won't protect you from every form of spyware known to man, it is a very potent extra layer of protection.
Don't forget to check for updates every week or so.

Let's also not forget that SpyBot Search and Destroy has the Immunize feature which  works roughly the same way.
It can't hurt to use both.

5) Another brilliant program by Javacool we recommend is SpywareGuard. http://www.wildersse...ywareguard.html

It provides a degree of real-time protection solution against spyware that is a great addition to SpywareBlaster's protection method.

An anti-virus program scans files before you open them and prevents execution if a virus is detected - SpywareGuard does the same thing, but for spyware! And you can easily have an anti-virus program running alongside SpywareGuard.
It now also features Download Protection and Browser Hijacking Protection! 

6) IE-SPYAD puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone,  so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
