when i put the dvd drive in to the other computer and booted, what happened was a hp dialog box open up and said hp has found and added a new piece of hard ware. And then it showed the dvd drive and then it played a movie. i dont know if while it said it was installing, it pulled a driver from thefrom the internet or not. It did show up on his computer as the 400i.

The drive is labeled 400i

On an added note, even if DLA is installed, if the driver letter of the DVD writer has changed since putting in the new hard drive, then the installed DLA won't work because it will be looking for the DVD writer on the wrong driver letter.

You can download DLA from HERE.

*Edit* -- DO NOT INSTALL DLA UNTIL YOU HAVE THE COMPUTER SET UP THE WAY IT IS GOING TO STAY!

Set up the computer to where the BIOS and windows recognize everything. Meaning it recognizes all hard drives and cd/dvd drives connected to the computer. Basically go back to the time where the computer recognized everything, including the 400i, but that the 400i wouldn't read any type of medai. THEN install DLA from the link I provided.

It means CD's must be formatted when writing to them. You wont lose anything.

If that doesn't work, then I suggest you go the route of installing the firmware upgrade for your DVD Writer from this link. If that doesn't work, you can always order the HP DVD Writer dvd400i Installation Disc for around $10.51, which is cheaper then buyin ga new DVD writer.
