by going downstairs you cannot gurantee what light switch controls each one, you can only leave the light switches once to check

When you leave the lightswitch you can see the light of the floor you are on though.

There are 3 light switches on a wall.

They control 3 lights, one on the floor above you, one on the floor you are on, one on the floor below you.

You CANNOT see ANY of the lights.

How can you identify what switch goes to what light by going upstairs only once.

When you leave the lightswitch you can see the light of the floor you are on though.

I thought I had the answer when I devised a plan:
turn off all switchs
tape a fully inflated ballon to each light
turn on switchs one at a time untill each ballon pops

But then it came to me:
all switchs off, wait
two switchs on for 5 minutes
turn off one of the 2 switchs
go upstairs immediatly
if hall light on, feel bulb upstairs, or vica-versa

hall out, upstairs out, downstairs has to be switch on
one of the two other bulbs will be hot (heat generated from bulb, remember popping the balloon). Any position for switchs will be identified.

Someone else please post a riddle, or else I will have to get out the old quantum mathematics book and give a really hard question!

Very nice harry, you are correct.

What is greater than god...
Meaner than the devil...
Poor people have it....
Rich people want it....
You will die if you eat it...

i guess it's my turn

Five hundred begins it, five hundred ends it,
Five in the middle is seen;
First of all figures, the first of all letters,
Take up their stations between.
Join all together, and then you will bring
Before you the name of an eminent king.

All about, but cannot be seen,
