Hi
rstrui.exe is present in folder C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386
and also in the folder C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore
I am not able to open it though I get the same notice that I would when trying to open System Restore.

Ah yes.

Rightclick "My Computer" select Properties and click the System Restore tab.

Then make sure it is set to only look at C:\

Does that help?

no sorry- under C: it has a status of turned off
maybe i need to change some of the values under the registry editor for System Restore
I read this on a website:
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.
If a "DisableSR" value doesn't exist, go to the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value, and create the value.
Set the value to 1 to disable System Restore or 0 to enable System Restore.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr to prevent the System Restore service from starting.

Double-click Start, and set the value to 4 to stop the service from starting or to 0 for normal startup. Close the registry editor.

should i do this?

And when you uncheck the ''Turn off System Restore'' button, that is enough to trigger the error?

1) Click on Start, Run and type gpedit.msc in the Run box and press Enter
2) In the left hand column, click on Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, System, System Restore
3) In the right hand column, set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Disable
4) Minimize the Group Policy Editor
5) Right click on My Computer and Select Manage
6) In the right hand column, double click on Services and Applications, then Services
7) Find the System Restore Service and double-click to open
8) On the General tab set [Startup Type] to Automatic using the drop down list
9) Click the Start button to start the service
10) Close the Computer Management console
11) Maximize the Group Policy Editor and set Turn off System Restore and Turn off Configuration to Not Configured
12) Close Group Policy Editor and reboot the system.
13) Once the system is rebooted, Click on Start, Right-click on My Computer, click on Properties and the System Restore tab should appear again.

No problem. I could have asked now that is was important.
Sometimes the few differences between Home and Pro are forgotten.
Especially when you are running a customized version. :whistling:

Can you click Start > Run > services.msc > OK
to check if the System Restore Service is running?
If not, rightclick and start the service.
Under properties you can set the startup type to Automatic if it was not running.

I went into services and found System Restore but it was blank next it its status. When I opened the folder it read status ''stopped'' I clicked the start button after setting the startup type to automatic and a message appeared that read ''the system restore service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they have no work to do, for example, the Performance logs and Alerts service''

OK. Now can you try to turn the System Restore on.
Rightclick "My Computer" > System Restore tab

Hopefully then it will realize it has work to do and do something usefull. :whistling:
