Hello peterm
There is one 'Windows' file that wont go its C:\windows\system32\macromed\flash\flash9.ocx Its a 'read only' "activex control" file - any ideas ?

I'll defreg this machine as the HDD must be a mess now

Open your browser and in the address line type 192.168.1.254 press enter or press Go.
Does this open the BT Hub?

Yes its ok it takes me to the Hub manager
You only need a Password to access the 'Advanced' options pages

Ok re the printer at present its cabled into the Dell and shared so it can be seen by the Systemax.
As usual I have a question before I go through your printer instructions
Would you tell me at what stage I plug it into the Hub with a USB cable ?

Thanks a lot :whistling:

Should be the same password as before - try admin

Would you tell me at what stage I plug it into the Hub with a USB cable ?

Plug the cable in, turn the printer on, run the add printer wizard.

1) Try this Remove flash
2)Use code stuff starter see if the program is loaded in startup or in processes if yes then disable it and then go and try to delete it.
3) we try dos mode

Hello peterm

3) we try dos mode

Can we try this to get rid of the last file from 'Windows' I could always put it somewhere else - it wont cause any problems will it
I'm trying to remember my DOS commands its 'del' isn't it ( This takes me back to my Win3.1/ Win95 days getting games to run for my son and writing 'Autoexec.bat' and 'config.sys' files onto boot floppies)

Plug the cable in, turn the printer on, run the add printer wizard.

Did this using LPT1 and made it the default printer and shared it - not sure about whether to do that !!
Went through the rest of the instructions ok (I hope) tried to print a test page but it failed to print

Print 1 page - Test page will do. Then open a document and try to print another page.
It can be picky of when it wants to work. If it stops working unplug the usb port for the printer on the back of the hub cancel your print jobs then plug it back in again. If this happens then let me know

I unplugged the USB cable cancelled the print job and plugged it back in again and requested another test print it appears in the print queue but does not print Deleting from the queue takes ages The light which normally flashes to show its got data to print is flashing after the job cancels
Another little problem !!

Thanks for all the help - up to you if you want to go on trying to sort the printer

Hi peterm

Did you try step 1 ?

Just tried it again and have now been able to delete the file (something left open or something I did wrong I expect) but I can now not delete the 'Windows' folder on C:\
Dont you love all this ! ?

Thanks

PS dont know if this will alter anything on the printer front but I've just been offered and installed an 'MS update' for the printer (printer software update from EPSON)
So I tried a test page and that printed ok - I then tried printing a document and it wouldn't so I unplugged deleted the job and plugged in again
When I printed the document again it started to print then stopped mid way.
I'll wait to hear from you

Hi Chris
Do you get any error messages when you try to delete the windows folder?
double click my computer. Click on tools>folder options>view tab.
Under hidden files & folders put a mark next to show hidden files and folders, uncheck hide extensions for know file types and uncheck hide protected operating files (recommended) you will get a warning message click yes then click ok
to exit, have a look in the windows folder we are trying to delete are there any more files in there? if yes delete them then try to delete the folder.
As for the printer that is what I thought from my research. will keep looking but that is the response I seem to find.
Open my network places. On the left hand side click on view workgroup computers. You should see an icon for the hub
click on that is the printer listed?
Cheers
Peterm

And just a note - when I've had problems with wireless / usb printer connections before - especially with documents 'jamming' the connection, it has usually been because the page properties (a4 etc) do not match the printer's defaults. So have a look at that if you have any problems.

Hello peterm - that always sounds so formal can I call you Peter?

Do you get any error messages when you try to delete the windows folder?

No just the animated box with the files 'flying' across then that stops and nothing has happened

double click my computer.

Did that several files were revealed - I have deleted them all one I had to change the attributes of one but 'Windows' is now gone ! :whistling:  Thanks very much one problem gone.

Open my network places. On the left hand side click on view workgroup computers. You should see an icon for the hub
click on that is the printer listed?

Did that - no Hub icon only 'Dell' and 'Systemax' Its the same on both PCs
I notice in Settings>Printers and Faxes there is now an icon for "Microsoft XPS Document Writer" on the Systemax - would this be as a result of setting up the Network printer?

QUOTE

hmmmmmmmmmm

I checked the printer and 'Notepad's' settings and they both show "A4 210 x297 mm"

USB Printer on home hub........
6.Choose LPR as protocol Queue Name: LPT1 DONT check LPR byte counting as enabled, click ok.

Went into properties on the printer I set up and unchecked 'LPR byte counting'
Tried a test page and nothing happened job appeared in print manager so I unplugged and deleted the job (which took a couple on mins to work)
Plugged in the USB cable again and tried another test print it got about half way though and stopped with the printer light flashing
Tried a PC 'restart' clicked 'test print' and nothing happens job appears in print manager.

Wait to hear from you about the printer if you want to go on
Thanks

Hi Chris

Hello peterm - that always sounds so formal can I call you Peter?

Call me what you like just don't call me late for a beer

'Windows' is now gone

:whistling:
Quick read about xps
Does your printer have a spot to plug in an ethernet cable (my guess is no).
From what I can gather it is more a hit and miss some printers work some don't.
There is a program called lptr printing which is to make 98 talk to a network printer. When I get a chance I will load it to xp and try.
Other then the printer is everything else ok?
On this page here where I got the broken english post from there is a user called Mandy and about 10 post down she says they don't support printing (sounds like she works for BT Bthub
Cheers

Hi Peter

Call me what you like just don't call me late for a beer

After all this I think I owe you a beer or three !!

Quick read about xps

I have 'quickly' read this - no doubt it will sink into my brain in time!

Does your printer have a spot to plug in an ethernet cable (my guess is no).

Correct it doesn't

From what I can gather it is more a hit and miss some printers work some don't.

My printer is an Epson C60 and in one of the recent posts the guy is talking about getting his Epson C62 to work Here
It seems very odd that some people can get it to work others cant - is it my machine ?
By the way I haven't done anything on the Dell concerning the printer networking - there is now also an XPS printer icon on the Dell however.

There is a program called lptr printing which is to make 98 talk to a network printer. When I get a chance I will load it to xp and try.

Thanks - hope it can help

Other then the printer is everything else ok?

Just a question ! - can I delete the virtual machine?

On this page here where I got the broken english post from there is a user called Mandy and about 10 post down she says they don't support printing (sounds like she works for BT Bthub

Once again some seem to be lucky and get it to work others dont. Should the printer I set up be 'shared' and the 'default' ?

Thanks

Hi Chris
Yes you can delete Virtual machine
You remove Virtual PC by using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Removing Virtual PC from a computer only removes the Virtual PC program. All virtual machine files, including the virtual machine configuration (.vmc) file and virtual hard disk (.vhd) file, remain on the computer.
the vhd folder & vmc files should be around here.
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\My Documents\My Virtual Machines.
If not use search and put .vhd

Should the printer I set up be 'shared' and the 'default'

Never thought or that I always share my printers. You only have to make it the default if you leave the other setup on there ( where it was connected to the dell).
If the lptr does not help then either we go back to using it via the dell or iits a matter of changing a setting at a time to see what works. From reading about the bthub I do not think it is your machine - don't forget you have a fresh install of xp.
Please try installing the printer fom the dell - start out with the original settings I gave you. If that does not work then try changing lpt1 to lpt2.
Cheers

I will work on the printer and let you know ASAP

PS the link for the epson c62 does not work

Sorry about that - something I did wrong - I'm getting to old for this brain work - lol :whistling: Tried again but it says the link is broken or to old !

Here it is copied "I AM USING THE EPSON C62 AND MY ONE IS WORKING FINE ALLSO WORKS WITH C42 AND C82 SORRY ONLY PRINT HAD STOCK OF AT TIME OF TRYING WILL ADD MORE AS I TRY MORE BUT I WOULD ASUME IT PROBERLY DOES WORK WITH ANY USB PRINT WHITCH IS PRINT SERVER CABBLE SO NEARLY ALL NEW ONES 12 MONTHS OR NEWER SHOULD DEFENITLY BE ABLE TO"

Yes
Might be best if you register on that site and see if you can ask him for the settings
Epson working.
Or you go into the port settings of the printer and change 1 thing at a time.
Cheers
