OK So the disc was burned correctly that time - but it just did the same as my express upgrade disc, Booted from disk, I pressed any key, vista loading bar appeared, then blue screen of death appeared and stayed there.

Will the machine boot to Safe Mode if you tap the F8 key during the boot and choose it from the options? OR will it boot to the command prompt option when using either disk?

It won't boot at all, no matter what option is chosen, we've tried them all
Using the first (incorrectly burned) disk I get a command prompt type thing, I know basic cmd commands, like browsing around and making/deleting folders, but thats about it, what do you suggest I do?
I really appreciate your help

I wonder what boot loader is being used.
Let's look at the boot.ini file. While logged on to the XP installation, right click on My Computer and choose "Properties". In the Properties window, click on the "Advanced" tab. In the Startup and Recovery section, click on the "Settings" button. In the window that opens, click on the "Edit" button...a notepad window will open (boot.ini)...copy the contents of that window and paste it here for me.

;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.
;
[boot loader]

It's using the Vista boot loader...which needs to be accessed in Vista.
When you boot to the disk, how far does it get? It should load files...then enter the interface...then ask for location/time/currency information...then ask to select the operating system...then offer repair options.

It loads the files, then the Vista loading bar appears for a couple of seconds, then I get the blue screen of death!

Do you have time to get the error codes from the BSOD or does it flash too quickly?
It's starting to look like a reinstall will be about the only way to get Vista running again.

I shall have to ask my grandad in the morning - he installed it.

A system that's not validated is one of the main causes of the error you're getting. If he didn't validate the installation, it may have expired and you'll have to reinstall to make it work again.
Let's wait and see what he has to say before we do too much more...

He says he validated it, he says if he didn't, it would have only worked on basics, and for a limited time, I think the problem wass beacuse I powered off the computer while it was updating.
One thing I didn't make clear in the origonal post was that I had been using Vista for months before I knacked it.
Cheers,
Connor
