Yes that is what we have been attemting to do i.e. get it out of your start up programs. So far the things that would normally do that haven't worked.

Lets try this one.

Download and install Startuplite. It is a tool to help you stop some programs not immediately needed from loading when you start your computer. They will begin automatically only when you click on them.

After that reboot and post a new HijackThis log back here and tell me if there has been any change.

Ok after the reboot that stupid box still showed up, it was not one of the options to disable when I ran the StartupLite program just now. I did disable everything that did come up, and it did reboot a little bit faster. Also a box about compressing messages in my Outlook Express popped up as well. It had stopped doing that before now. Well that OneNote is back in the HJT log again. The files have gone though so lets see if fixing it with HJT will work this time.

Firstly: Please disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.

Disable Webroot Spy Sweeper by:

1. Right-mouse click (right-click) the Webroot Spy Sweeper icon located in the system tray.
2. Select Shut Down from the shortcut menu. Click the Shut Down button to confirm.

For Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows XP systems:

3. Next, click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
4. Double-click Administrative Tools and then double-click Services.
5. Find and double-click Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine listed under the Name column.
6. Click the Stop button to stop the Webroot service.
7. Click OK to close the Webroot Spy Sweeper Engine properties.

A quick sidenote....I *think* I may have found one of the roots of my problem. Now that the OneNote2007 box is not popping up anymore (YAY!! THANK YOU!!! ) I was looking into this Windows Search 4.0 thing that seems to have been one of the updates I did at one point during this process. After some googling it, it seems that it slows a computer down, and causes issues with constant indexing. I can't seem to find a definite way to remove it though. I would like to, b/c I think that's what's causing the Outlook Express compacting messages box to keep coming up. In several of the links I read on it, it seems to not be worth having. Any suggestions??

Well we are straying right outside my area of expertise here.

I think you would be best posting a new topic in the XP Tech section. They are much better equipted to answer those questions. If you do go, tell them you have been here and have a clean bill of health on the malware front.

One thing I did find though was this discussion on Microsoft communities site which may be helpful to you.

Now that your machine is clean we have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and some tools used in the removal of malware

• Click START then RUN
• Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  

After that please go here to download OTCleanIt.

Run this program to remove the remaining tools we have been using.

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep. You can delete the AFT Cleaner folder but again it might be useful. I run it once a week on my machine to clear away all the rubbish that has built up. The Startuplite folder can be deleted.

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

Make Internet Explorer more secure

• Click Start > Run
• Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
• Click on the Security tab
• Click Reset all zones to default level
• Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
• In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
• Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up blocker (Note: this as an added benefit!) that I have seen. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

One quick thing, I started a topic about the Window Search 4.0 removal, and I added this question in there, but I'm going to add it here to in case it's something we need to look at.

I've had one new freeze up tonight. Everything's been okay until now. I left the room for about 20 minutes to do something, came back in and it was frozen up. I downloaded and installed Firefox and have been doing the things you suggested, and so far my scans are all still completely clean. Could the freezing up be a different issue rather than viruses/malware? Which section would best serve me to post this question if it could be something else?

I see you are talking to wannabe1. You mustn't deal with two helpers in different topics at the same time. It can result in confusion and bad advice. I think the best bet is for me to leave this open and monitor your other thread. I don't think you have an infection but you may have conflict or some program upsetting your machine.

For the meantime I think wannabe1 will give you better advice on that.
