Hi Jimmy,

Well the blockage in Diskeeper Lite has cleared and the drive is now being defragged. I will come back again when all is finished.

I have the lsdelete splash screen on my laptop as well, can I safely use the code that we applied to the PC on that as well?

Hi Jimmy,

All the defragging went OK and the machine seems to be running OK. I have used the internet quite a bit with no problems and have even fixed a problem in Outlook that I discovered was caused by a bad add-in.

I also seem to have lost connectivity between my Laptop, my PC and my wife's PCover the network. Do you have a guide or tutorial for networks, as I suspect that it is possibly a settings issue.?

My main concern now is that I am running on the Widows Firewall, as it was installing the Sunbelt Firewall that seemed to contribute to the original problem. I would appreciate your advice here.

I look forward to your feedback.

Regards,

Philip

Hello PhilipW97,

Not sure, I would have to see a log from the laptop first. If you would like after we are done with this computer you could post a log from your laptop and I will take a look at it?

Could you please give me more detail in the problems you are having with them? When did this start?

My main concern now is that I am running on the Widows Firewall

Here are a few firewalls you could try if you would like.

Comodo
Zone Alarm
OutPost

I recommend Comodo, please do not use more then one firewall at a time.

Hi Jimmy,

Taking your points in order:

OK, I will post again when we have closed this issue.

Problem resolved; however, for your info, it turned out to be a problem caused by my ISP changing the way I receive their signal because of a conflict between their servers and my Netgear WiFi Router v7. This resulted in a change of IP address, which the computers picked up dynamically, so I didn't notice for internet access, but the firewalls were blocking the network connections until I entered the new trusted addresses.

OK, I have downloaded Comodo and will install later today. I'm off out now, so will let you know how it works, probably tomorrow after I have used the PC for a bit. I will switch off the XP Firewall as well. :)

Regards,

Philip

Hi Jimmy,

Well Comodo has been installed for 24 hours now and I used my PC for most of yesterday with no ill effects.

So, apart from starting up slowly, the PC seems to be running just fine now.

I have culled a couple of programmes that I no longer need, but don't see much scope for getting rid of any more until I retire in a couple of years, when I can get rid of a lot of business related ones.

I await your further advice and guidance.

Regards,

Philip

Would you like to try to turn some problems off from starting and see if that can help out any?

Hi Jimmy,

Sounds good to me, especially as this seems to be a problem on all three of our machines. I don't seem to have a lot of programmes in the Start Up Folder, but there are a lot of processes launching at start up and I don't recognise a lot of them because of the gobbledegook names.

Hello PhilipW97,

Please click Start>Run, in the box that opens please type in msconfig. In the new window that opens please click Startup and un-check these items (if present).

Adobe Reader Speed Launcher
AppleSyncNotifier
HotKeysCmds
IgfxTray
LanguageShortcut
NeroFilterCheck
QuickTime Task
RemoteControl
SunJavaUpdateSched
TkBellExe

Click Apply and then OK and restart your computer, after you restart you may receive a dialogue box stating "System is running using Selective Startup", check Don't show this message or launch the system configuration utility when Windows Starts and click OK.

Doing the above will stop those programs from starting when your computer starts up, if you need any of those programs started all you need to do is start the program yourself.

Also, please tell me any other programs you see in that list that you would like to turn off.

Hi Jimmy,

I have removed some of the items that you suggested from the startup list, I didn't find the others. However, I did find some similar looking names, which I have not removed and seek your guidance on. Finally, I have listed other items that are candidates for removal. Please find all of the above in my attachment.

Subjectively, I didn't notice much difference at the reboot, but we have only removed a few items so far! :) Attached File  Startup_Items.doc   38KB   18 downloads

Hi Jimmy,

OK, done that. Reboot seemed a bit quicker.

I have also stopped my translator programme and MS Groove as I can always start these when I want to translate something or to synch folders between my PC and laptop.

I will restart after sending this message and let you know later how things pan out.

Any other suggestions for housekeeping/maintenance?

Make sure you keep all of your programs up to date, run scans with your anti-malware programs every 1-2 weeks. And keep your temp files cleaned out and run disk defragmenter about once a month.

Hi Jimmy,

Startup seems much better now, thank you. I have one supplementary query though :) Secunia notified me at startup that my QuickTime needed updating, which I did and it put another QTTask into the system tray. I now have two disabled versions there, along with some other things that I don't need or are duplicated. Can I remove items from startup that are duplocated or that experience dictates I will not need? If so, how do I do it please?

OK, I'm doing that.

Hello PhilipW97,

These items should be able to be removed after changing a setting in the registry. Those items will not hurt anything, however if you would like to remove them we can. Just let me know. :)
