Hi Jimmy,

These items should be able to be removed after changing a setting in the registry. Those items will not hurt anything, however if you would like to remove them we can. Just let me know.

If i am going to get duplicates every time I update a programme, it will probably be useful to know how to remove these traces, so yes please.

Something else has started to happen this last few days. Although the start up item is still showing as enabled, Skype is not starting up every time I switch my machine on. I prefer Skype to start up automatically as my students sometimes call me on it and if the icon is in the system tray i get a warning that someone is calling, otherwise I have to start manually and then minimise it, which i don't always remember to do. Any ideas?

Regards,

Philip

Hello PhilipW97,

it will probably be useful to know how to remove these traces, so yes please.

Before we do anything, please run the following.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the following code into the Notepad window.
@Echo off
regedit.exe /e G2Glook.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shared Tools
Start G2Glook.txt
Del peek.bat
Click on File then Save As
In the Save in drop down box select Desktop
In the File name box type in peek.bat
In the Save as type drop down box select All Files
Close Notepad.

Now, find peek.bat on your Desktop and Double click it
A window will open and close, do not be concerned this is normal.

Please copy/paste the text in the notepad that opens in your next reply.

Although the start up item is still showing as enabled, Skype is not starting up every time I switch my machine on.

Is this item set to start?

Hi Jimmy,

I tried peek.bat, but when I ran it I got this:

Windows cannot find G2Glook.txt

so back to you on that one!

Skype is sorted, I re-enabled SkyTel, which didn't fix it so I looked back to see what else we had disabled that might be involved and re-enabled, RTHDCPL as well and that seems to have sorted it. I should have thought to selectively re-enable the things we had disabled, but life has been a bit hectic lately and I didn't spend enough time thinking. Sorry :)

As ever, many thanks for your continued assistance.

Hello PhilipW97,

so back to you on that one!

I am very sorry about that, I made a typo on that. :)
Please try this.

Open Notepad and copy/paste the following code into the Notepad window.
@Echo off
regedit.exe /e G2Glook.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Msconfig"

Hi Jimmy,

Herewith the post that you asked for. I shall be away for a week from early tomorrow morning, Thursday, until late on Wednesday the 17th; so, I will not be able to follow up any of your directions, please do not think I am ignoring anything you say! :) Also, I spoke too soon yesterday; when I switched on this morning several start up items did not appear: Skype, my Logitech video camera icon, the icon for safely removing memory sticks and possibly a few more. I have only the Avast icon, Secunia, Outlook, Pamela Voice recorder and the internet traffic icon (Two little computers)I will send this and then reboot to see what happens. If there is anything significantly different I will send a second message.

Hi Jimmy,

OK, I rebooted and everything loaded as normal. I then re ran peek.bot to see if anything was different, but comparing the two documents side by side I can see no difference.

Over to you,

Philip

Hello PhilipW97,

I shall be away for a week from early tomorrow morning

Ok, no problem.

Also, I spoke too soon yesterday; when I switched on this morning several start up items did not appear:

Could you please turn the items you have off back on and see if that fixes it?

Hi Jimmy,

OK, I'm back and have caught up with the urgent work!

After I sent my last message, I let Avast run a scan while I was packing up my briefcase, it claimed to have detected a Trojan, so I deleted it via Avast. This is the detection alert:

10/06/2009 18:32:03 Philip 5824 Sign of "Win32:Adloader-AC [Trj]" has been found in "C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP" file.

The system seemed to be OK when I returned, although the system tray icons are erratic in appearing. Yesterday, they were all OK, but this morning they have appeared, except for Skype, on initial start up, but not all when I rebooted and the little left pointing arrow to reveal hidden icons was missing. I re enabled all the start up items that we had disabled, but to no effect. I reloaded Skype and that put its icon into the system tray, but when I rebooted again it was missing.

Back to you sir,

Philip

Hello PhilipW97,

except for Skype, on initial start up,

In the program Skype, do you have it to start when windows loads?

Yes. I just checked to see if anything has changed and it still shows start with Windows as selected.

Hello PhilipW97,

Another question about Skype, does it load at start-up and just does not put its icon in the system tray or does it not start at all?

The short answer is that I am not sure, but I think it is loading without the icon as when I use the Desk Top short cut the Skype window comes up immediately. Now that you have asked, I would look in the Task Manager if there was no icon, but this morning everything seems to be normal in the system tray. (Sod's Law :) ) I have to go out in a bit to take someone to the airport, so I will log off and see what happens later...

Hi Jimmy,

Sorry, I got caught up in other things yesterday.

This morning, I don't have the Skype icon, nor several others and the arrow icon for revealing additional icons is missing. So, I checked on the task manager and the Skype.exe and SkypePM.exe processes were running, I then clicked on the desktop Skype shortcut and the window opened immediately and when I made a call everything worked fine. So this seems to be more of a nuisance than a problem, but if you know a fix i would be delighted to receive it! :-)
Best regards,

Philip

I am not really sure as I do not use Skype. In the settings for it, is there a option that has something to do with a Taskbar icon?

I have gone through all the settings that I can find for Skype and can see no such setting. The Skype icon appears on some start ups and not others, apparently randomly. I can live with this, but it seems strange that it is happening only recently; the reason that I raised it was that I thought it might be strange behaviour induced by some malware. However, repeated scans over the last several weeks have shown nothing untoward, except that fragment that Avast found recently. I have just updated MBAM and run another scan, which shows no malware problems:
