According to file.net....

sbp2port.sys file information

The process SBP-2 Protocol Driver belongs to the software SBP-2 Transport/Protocol Bus Driver by Microsoft Corporation (www.microsoft.com).

Description: sbp2port.sys is located in the folder C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Known file sizes on Windows XP are 43,136 bytes (85% of all occurrence), 43,904 bytes.
The driver can be started or stopped from Services in the Control Panel or by other programs. The program has no visible window. It is a Microsoft signed file. There is no detailed description of this service. sbp2port.sys seems to be a compressed file. Therefore the technical security rating is 2% dangerous, however also read the users reviews.

It is a microsoft file but I would suspect it is a needed service for something. That is why I wonder if it is missing and that is what is causing the issue.

To prevent the System File Checker from disappearing like that, open up a command prompt first then run sfc /scannow and see what output it gives you.

Ugh, I get a message that reads "You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility." I'm so frustrated with all these permissions issues. I am the only person who will ever use this desktop. Is it possible to just make me the only user and allow me to do everything I want on this computer?

Then you need to right click on the search line and then click on Run as administrator before typing in the command.

See, now we know why it fails :)

Now, I would recommend as rshaffer61 said, to run as admin. In order to run completely unrestricted, turn off UAC.

Thanks again. Here is the output:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Copyright © 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of th
em.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

C:\Windows\system32>

---

I tried to post the log, but - no surprise - I don't have access and can't figure out how to gain it.

Try running a chkdsk /r first, then run sfc /scannow again. If that doesnt work, make sure you have your Windows CD handy for the next step.

It says the volume is in use by another process. I can schedule it to be checked at restart. Should I do that?

Yes
I believe what my fellow geek is going to suggest is a Repair Installation for the next step and if so I'm sure he can supply the steps needed. If that doesn't work then we need to try a parallel installation and move the data over. I have the instructions for both but will wait to see what he says.
