I got an email saying that if I didn't post something I would be just a plain member.
Had to tell Gmail that it was not spam.
So I will just say I refer to this wonderful tutorial all the time. Many thanks for it. :)

Hello.

I have a folder called _OTL on my disk.
Its size is 3.84 MB. It has another folder called MovedFiles with one folder named 02032011_231659 and a txt file named the same. it probably indicates the date of OTL scan.

My question is whether I can simply delete the entire folder without any adverse effect on the system?
I would like some space to be freed on the disk and would like to remove all useless data.

thank you for your help.

Hi and welcome to Geeks to Go. :)

Yes you can safely delete the folder _OTL, however bare in mind anything you may have removed with OTL prior will now be gone.

Alternatively re-download OTL from here. Then start OTL...

  • Now close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot.
  • On the OTL main screen, depress the CleanUp button.
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Question about CleanUp. Does it run 'ComboFix /uninstall'? or merely delete ComboFix?

Have to say I myself don't quite trust CleanUp as it seems sometimes DDS files get left on the Desktop. So my cleanup speech says:

Start > Run and enter 'combofix /uninstall'. Note the space after 'combofix'. Among other things your Restore Points will be purged and a new clean one created.

Delete the DDS files and Security Check folder from your Desktop.
If you installed OTL, run it and click 'CleanUp'.

Some think this is overkill but I've wanted to make sure that the ComboFix /uninstall gets run as it has many things to do.

Hi

The link under O27 - Image file execution options, in the OTL tutorial, pointing to a McAfee blog isn't working. Can this be updated please?

Question about CleanUp. Does it run 'ComboFix /uninstall'? or merely delete ComboFix?

The latter...it merely deletes all CF components/logs etc so still prudent run the CF Uninstall procedure and or use OTL CleanUp this way for example(just edit to suit the Operating System). :)

  • Right-click OTL and select Run as Administrator to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
:Commands
[ClearAllRestorePoints]
  • Return to OTL, right-click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the cyan bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then click the red Run Fix button.
  • Let the program run unhindered. When finished click on OK and close the log that appears.
  • Note: I do not need to review the log produced.
  • Now close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot.
  • On the OTL main screen, depress the CleanUp button.
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
The above process will flush old System Restore points and create a new clean one. It should also clean up and remove the vast majority of scanners used and logs created etc.

Any left over merely delete yourself and empty the Recycle Bin.

[emptyjava] a new command? Will this be added to the tutorial?
Great idea by the way for both CF and OTL to have this feature.

Yes the tutorial will be updated.

Unfortunately I have not been able to spend time on in recently but I should be free to do it soon. :)

Hello -
A very quick question about the output from the Header area of the log.
I followed the directions to the letter, as written at the start of this tutorial, but I get a "slightly" changed reading.
Tutorial shows - Folder = C:\Users\Anyone\Desktop
One example from forum - Folder = C:\Users\nwofan\Desktop

While some others show the same as mine below.
Mine shows (in OTL and Extras) - Folder = C:\Documents and Settings\John.JOHN-1E5571CE01\Desktop

The program is saved to Desktop directly, not a link / shortcut from Documents (XP Pro SP3 unit, with I.E.8).
Have I missed something in the download or is this just normal for some ?

Thank You
EDIT -
Is this due to me using XP and other examples are later Operating Systems ?
