I tried to repair Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 but it failed. I tried it one more time and it failed again. I got this message:

".NET Framework 3.5 SP1 has encountered a problem during setup. Setup did not complete correctly."

OK .Net problems are a bit of a pain to resolve, I will be back later with the solution - but it is long winded I am afraid

These errors are usually caused by a corruption in the .NET Framework installation or by an inconsistency on the MSI database state. Alas there is only one way to fix this and it is quite long winded

Part 1:

Manually remove

  • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Note each version of the .NET Framework that is already installed on the computer. Then, uninstall all the versions of the .NET Framework.
  • When you are prompted, restart the computer.

Part 2:

Cleanup

  • Download and extract dotnet cleanup tool to your desktop
  • Run the Cleanup_tool.exe programme
  • Reboot once it has completed

Part 3:

Reinstallation

To make the final cure you will need to download and re-install all .net frameworks )

To download the .NET Framework 1.0, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To download the .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To download the .NET Framework 1.1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To download the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To download the .NET Framework 2.0, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To download the .NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To download the .NET Framework 3.0, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To download the .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
To download the .NET Framework 3.5, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
When you are prompted, restart the computer

Then try to re-install I tunes

I'm already stuck on step 1. I was only able to uninstall 1.0 and 3.5. At first when I tried to uninstall 2.0 and 3.0, it said I couldn't uninstall it, because it will affect other applications that are installed. Then I uninstalled 3.5, and I went back and tried to uninstall 2.0 and 3.0 again. 3.0 started to uninstall, and then I got "an error occurred while writing installation information to disk. Check to make sure enough disk space is available, and click Retry, or cancel to end the install." (even though I was trying to UNinstall). I clicked retry anyway, and that didn't work. I hit cancel and tried to start all over, and I got the same thing. When I try to uninstall 2.0, I get the same message that another program is using it.

BTW, tried to reboot after that and try again. I got the same message for 2.0, saying that another application was using it. This time when I tried to uninstall 3.0, it said "Another installation is already in progress. Complete that installation before proceeding with this install."

Jump to the dotnet cleanup tool in part two - that should resolve that problem

OK, step two appeared to work. I'm guessing I should start installing the .NET framework in the order you listed them? I tried the first one listed, 1.0. It asked me where to extract the files, so I just made a temp folder. When I ran the dotnetfx.exe, I got this: Setup cannot install Microsoft.NET Framework (English) v1.03705 because it is already installed."

Continue with them all please, I feel .Net was a big error on MS's part as it does cause a lot of problems. The concept was good though

Thanks, and sorry for the long delay. I got through the rest of the .NET Framework installs and tried installing iTunes again. I chose the "repair" option, it said it was installed successfully, but when I try to run it, I get the same error message. The computer is running very slowly again. I haven't even been able to navigate websites so the last few times when I've tried to reply to this forum, I got so frozen up that I couldn't post, and I couldn't get to a computer that worked to give an update. So sorry about that.

No problem methinks I will do a deep AV scan - this will take a while as it goes deep. Currently I am reworking my instructions for this new version so it may differ slightly

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop.
  • Doubleclick the random named file, then click on ok for enhanced protection mode then start
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
  • Once the short scan has finished, chose the Complete Scan.
  • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
  • Click the green arrow Posted Image at the right, and the scan will start.
  • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
  • When the scan has finished, look and see if you can click the following icon next to the files found:
    Posted Image
  • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:
    Posted Image
  • This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
  • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Reboot your computer to allow files that were in use to be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply along with a new OTL log.
NOTE: During the scan, a pop-up window will open asking for full version purchase. Simply close the window by clicking on X in upper right corner.
