1. So apparently I cannot get Java to update the latest version to my PC automatically. I have to remember to check for updates on a regular basis. How often should I check? Maybe I don't even need it. I didn't install it until recently because some store web sites stated that I needed it to view their Weekly Ad.

2. I am using Firefox. My downloads automatically go to my Downloads folder. Is there a setting I can change so I can specify the folder destination at download time?

3. Since you don't like Adobe Acrobat, I would like to uninstall it. In program files, is that Adobe AIR? The only other Adobe programs I have are Adobe Flash Player 10 ActiveX and 10 Plugin.

The link to SpywareBlaster doesn't work.

Sorry about posting my last entry multiple times. It looked like your web site wasn't posting, and I backed out. But obviously it did post.

1. What error did you got when you try to update Java?

2. Open FireFox and click on menu Tools. Navigate and select Options... Click on General tab and in Downloads section check Always ask me where to save files. Click on OK button to confirm settings.

3. Let's see what you have installed:
  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click on None button at the top.
  • Under the Extra Registry section, check Use SafeList
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of Extras.txt and post it.

The link to SpywareBlaster doesn't work.

Thank you for letting me know. HERE is correct link.

1. I did not try to update Java. I was just hoping that maybe I don't need it, so I don't have to worry about remembering to get the latest update.

2. Got it. Thanks.

3. Should I get SpywareBlaster with AutoUpdate now FREE? Or is there a catch?

What I posted are my general recommendations. So if you don't have Adobe Reader or Java installed you are good.

3. Should I get SpywareBlaster with AutoUpdate now FREE? Or is there a catch?

Yes, there is a catch. :D You have to purchase some other product in this case. I recommend you to download free version and if you want you can donate some coins to developer.

It looks like I'm having problems with automatic Windows Updates again. It shows "updates installed 2/9/2011", but there has been "1 important update available" for several days now.

Also, I'm finding that sometimes I come back to my PC after a few hours and it is locked. I just click on the icon for my user WAYNE, and I'm back in, but I'm wondering why this is going on. It didn't start doing this until about a week ago.

Thanks.

Hi, wayneman50 and sorry for the delay

It looks like I'm having problems with automatic Windows Updates again. It shows "updates installed 2/9/2011", but there has been "1 important update available" for several days now.

Try to restart your computer and also tell me exactly what update this is.

This is a feature not an error. If I remember correctly it comes with one of Windows updates (probably with one of Net Framework updates).

Uugh! Too late. I did the update manually. It was for Silverlight, not that I even use it. I should have waited.

I found a setting to turn off the lock.

Another question:
What do you recommend for my automated backup to an external drive? I'm doing a custom backup. Should I check the box to include a disc image? Someone told me not to do this, because if my software gets a virus, the virus will be on the external drive.

Related question: I burned recovery discs from my PC just before I contacted you. Since we did find one or two viruses, does that mean that the viruses could be on the recovery discs? HP can send me recovery discs for $15. Should I buy those instead?

Let's say something happens to both my hard drive and external drive, can you recommend an online backup service? I currently have Carbonite, but I don't like it. There are some types of files it automatically excludes from the backup, and I have to manually mark every one of these files for backup.

I'm using and can recommend Cobian Backup 10.

Depends on what you're trying to do. I always backup only my essential data (documents and projects data and occasionally my personal and family pictures).

Yes. Viruses can be on your recovery disks. I would recommend to purchase recovery disks from HP.

Depends on how much data you want to backup. For my needs Dropbox is ideal and I can only recommend it.
