for the cd issue...The upper and lower filters are not in my registry.
this is probably the problem...try reinstalling roxio or whatever cd/burner program you have...
those filters put hooks into windows so the hardware can interact with windows...
they are removed when you uninstall roxio or itunes or other cd burning apps
==================
I didn't read the whole thread (book)... .. but if you still have connection to the internet issues...try this...
TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.
For these commands click on Start.... Run..... type in...CMD ....click OK
To Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults...type in ... netsh winsock reset catalog .... press ...enter
To Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults...type in...... netsh int ip reset reset.log ... press ...enter
reboot
if your still having problems then try windows updates...use the custom option...look on the left side for hardware updates and get any it says you need

I uninstalled Roxio Cd Creator 5. This is a really old version, could I get the same effect installing a demo of the new Roxio?
Also the internet connection is fine. The only problem I have left is that the cd-rom only works in safe mode. I even did the Dell Diagnostics and the cd-rom passed all of the tests.

I will try that tonight, also what if I don't have the cd for the windows that is on this laptop? I have a license code but no actual cd? Also since the cd drive just works in safe mode can I initiate the repair in safe mode?

borrow a retail cd from friends or coworkers...
set the boot order in the bios to the cd drive first and then the HD...then boot up with the cd in the cd drive and see what happens...

Thank you I will borrow a neighbor's copy tonight, his copy is XP Pro SP3. In my computer I updated to it from SP1, will the cd still work?

Providing they are the the SAME - XP Pro SP3 and you have XP Pro SP3 it may well work.
Have you tried that VLC player I sent you, it is certainly worth a try before going down the repair route.
If you have autoplay set to WMP you need to alter that to the VLC

I tried the VLC player and it always freezes before it even runs anything. I am still waiting on my friend's xp pro sp3 copy. How do I know if it is the same xp pro sp3 type? Thanks again.

Sorry I meant it will probably work if it is the XP Pro Sp3. and you have that. In otherwords it will not work if it is XP Pro SP2.
