Hmmm, that seems to have made a difference. I haven't gotten any pop-ups or Google redirects on a few random searches. What's our next step from here to keep it this way? I currently turned my anti-virus software (Microsoft Security Essentials) back on in the meantime.

Thank you for all the help, by the way. I know this has been just as frustrating for you as it has been for me.

Glad to hear that worked. You had a nasty rootkit infection that basically hijacked one of your legit system files and infected it, so I had you replace that file with a known clean duplicate.

Please try running ComboFix again and post the log if it runs.

Also,

Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Check to see if an update is available. If so, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked , and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Run ESET Online Scan

  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on Posted Image to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check Posted Image
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push Posted Image
  • Push Posted Image, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Push Posted Image
You can refer to this animation by neomage if needed.

Any idea how long ComboFix is supposed to take? I'm responding from another computer, but I've been letting it run unhindered for almost 4 hours now. It's still blinking, so I know it hasn't frozen like the last few times.

No go on ComboFix. It was running for about 2 hours in safe mode, doing nothing, before I just gave up. I dunno why that program will not finish.

The ESET Scan did not find any threats, so there was no log. Here is the MalewareBytes' Scan.

Hi thegamemodo9,

You may go ahead and enable Microsoft Security Essentials and run an update.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Reader 7.0
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4

Your Adobe Acrobat Reader is out of date. Older versions are vulnerable to attack.

Please go to the link below to update.

http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html

Posted Image Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:

Now for some cleanup..
Please download OTC and save it to Desktop.
  • Please make sure you are connecting to the Internet
  • Double-click OTC.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
    • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
    • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
    • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
    • Click "OK".
    • Click the "More Options" Tab.
    • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.

  • I recommend you install an alternate web browser such as FireFox. FireFox is a more secure browser than Internet Explorer and it has some additional tools you can install to help secure it even more.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Use a Firewall - I recommend using a firewall which will allow you to stay protected against hackers.
*Note: Starting with Windows XP SP2, Windows comes with a built in firewall, however, I recommend you choose one of the free firewalls listed below and install it.

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Install SpywareGuard - SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program or there will be a conflict.

  • Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware <= The best free antimalware application to remove malware and keep your computer clean. The free version is a great scanner to compliment your current antivirus software. However, if you upgrade to Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware PRO, you will get real-time protection against the latest malware threats.

  • Norton Safe Web <= Norton Safe Web protects your browser against malicious sites and warns you when you go to one.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Please keep these programs up-to-date. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

  • Update Non-Microsoft Programs - You can also use these free resources to check if there are any available updates to the programs you have installed: Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
