See if you have a restore point back to lets say June 15th as that should be well before the issue started.

OK that won't work hen.
Do you have a OS installation disk and if so is it a branded system recovery disk or a full Microsoft installation disk?
I see core system files that are not installed correctly or are corrupt.

Come to think of it, it never did let me restore when it all began.
I don't have a OS installation disk, no. What can I do from here?

You will need to borrow a OS disk from someone but it has to match what you have installed.

No what we will attempt to do is what is called a repair installation. It's designed to repair or replace any files that are corrupt or missing while leaving your data safe.

May I come in with a suggestion

The results of the system file check, show so many reports of corruption in the various places where backups of the system files are stored that one may indeed suspect
a HDD error

I know you have run chkdsk, but I cannot see the results

If I have missed them may I apologise

I would see great benefit running the chkdsk /r again, but this time getting the results for us and posting them

When you have run the chkdsk /r

the results are - on Control Panel, admin tools, event viewer, on left pane click windows logs, then click application, when that log loads, you want the wininit source.

Clicking on the source heading for the colums of the logs ONCE will sort them and then on the wininit entries you will see the chkdsk results the code is 1001

opening that entry by double clicking on it will confirm it is the chkdsk results

Then on the right hand pane click once on copy and then on reply use full editor and click paste

OR paste first to a word doc and then copy and paste to here.

Please paste it as the log NOT as a file

HERE are the instructions for you, if you have difficulty following the above
http://www.sevenforu...viewer-log.html

I realise it says 7 but it applies to vista as well

PLEASE would you post those results and then subject of course to my good colleague rshaffer61 and you agreeing, subject to what we see there

NOTE PLEASE DO NOT PROCEED AS BELOW until we have the chkdsk results

I have just had another look at that SFC, there are so many problems reported in so many areas, for instance SFC has found problems in your Winsock files which are involved in your internet connection and in various places
for files relating to updates, and the general running of the system, that I really do suspect a problem, caused by either the HDD or possibly the ram.

I know that you ran MEMTEST, as advised, but did you check on memtest to see WHAT ram memtest reported in the first place.

Here is your motherboard
Figure 1: Motherboard top view Posted Image

you say - you saw two sticks.
As you have according to an early post just 1GB of ram, if you have two sticks, they are MORE than likely 512 MB each
Are they in the blue slots
That motherboard caters for dual channel and the blue slots are ONE for EACH channel
The BLACK slots are ONE for EACH of the other channel

The sticks are released by GENTLY movuing away from the end of the stick the small white clips ate EACH end, holding the stick by the edges, not by the components, the stick is then lifted out of the slot.

THIS MUST BE DONE with the computer switched oof of course, and ALL leads disconnected.
YOU must then take hold of the bear metal case, inside the case with both hands to discharge any static in your body
You then remove a stick of ram - if they are In the BLUE you remove the stick from the second blue slot - furthest to the right as you look at that image.

YOU then boot the computer, you will ONLY HAVE 512MB of ram, so running many applications is a non starter, but you can try and see if it still crashes.

IF SO YOU CHANGE THE STICKS taking out the one that is left in and replacing it with the one you took out.
TO INSERT IT, you place it in the slot, noting the notch in the base of the stick, and ensuring the clips are still out from the slot, then you pusg GENTLY on top of the stick and the clips will automatically move back to the notches in the edges of the stick.
YOU CHECK that they have done so and TEST again.

WHILST you have the case open check for dust and dirt on the fans especially the fan of the CPU cooler which is mounted to the left of those sticks of ram, where on the image there is a small grey square. (which clearly shows that something is to be inserted there) ALSO if there is dust on the fans check the fins of the CPU cooler.

also CHECK ANY FAN on the video card which will be in one of the horixontal plane slots to the lower left of the image.
and may well be this

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply
Macboatmaster, thank you for your interest.

Trouble is the computer is not in English, but in Portuguese i.e. I cannot upload the Chkdsk report for you in English.
Still, I'm posting it here as suggested. If you happen to know a way I can get this information in English from the computer, please let me know.

As for testing the memory sticks one at a time, I'm willing to try it.
It's not just the blue screens or the computer that freezes and stops responding. Often I have to press 3-4 times the power button to get it to start and eventually working (like a car that won't start). Randomly, the screen turns black and the CPU starts beeping.

I'm uploading a few pictures of the computer's motherboard in order for you to see what I'm seeing.
There is a large bundle of wires over the sticks. I reckon I won't be able to remove the sticks just by opening one side of the computer. Any indication on how to do this in a safe way would be greatly appreciated.

Again, thank you for your time.
