Hi,

Some Antivirus uses Cloud technology they work by contacting servers on the internet but this does change the fact that you should have some icon related to the program on the taskbar near the clock and some option to disable the protection.

Hi SleepyDude, I clicked on every little picture by the clock. There is no Cbeyond antivirus. There is only MC Shield and I clicked on that to not work when I ran the first test. What do we do now?

Hi,

Cbeyond Secure Desktop is no longer on the list of installed programs do you want to reinstall it or switch to Avast?

If you decide to install Avast please remove the following programs:

- F-Secure PSC Prerequisites

- Surfing Protection
- McAfee Security Scan Plus

Hi SleepyDude, Happy Easter!  :geek:  Thank you once again for helping me with this issue. I really do appreciate your help!

I installed Avast anti virus. I removed iobit Surfing protection and mcafee security plus.  However I can not find F-Secure PSC Prerequisites on this computer. I did a search on the internet and found an uninstall string, "MsiExec.exe /I{F7875264-810A-4ABB-B185-2C5A332E483B}". When I run this it tells me "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed".

Thank You and a have a Happy Easter as well.

Good. The F-Secure PSC Prerequisites show up on the Minitoolbox log if you can't find it don't worry it's only an auxiliary program from F-Secure to check if the computer meet the requirements to install the Cbeyond Secure Desktop program.

Did Avast created the normal entry's on the Start Menu?

Hi SleepyDude, Avast is in Start, All Programs, From Avast the right arrow shows "(Empty)". When Avast was installed, it also installed Dropbox. From the Start menu to Dropbox then the right arrow has "Dropbox Website". If you click on it it takes you to the Dropbox website. It looks like to me that any AV or Malware removal does not get a normal install in the Start Menu, but something like dropbox gets a normal install. I can still access ASC, malwarebytes and avast from the area by the clock on the right hand bottom corner.

Hi,

We have to dig more about the shortcut problem...

I would like you to run Tweaking.com - Windows Repair like you did on Step 3 of post #44

and check the following box:

22 - Repair File Associations

Restart the computer and execute the test with my script.

If you can't see the shortcuts yet do the following test:

  • Right click on a empty space on the Desktop and click New > Shortcut
  • on the location of the item type notepad
  • click Next
  • click Finish

Did it create a shortcut on the Desktop to run Notepad?

Hi SleepyDude, I ran the TestLinks script. It did make a  Shortcut Test folder in my start menu. There were two shortcut folders created. One was windows calculator and one was notepad. When I pressed any key the shortcut test folder and its contents were removed. I also ceated a notebook shortcut on my desktop that will open notepad.

It seems the problem with the shortcuts is solved :) Try to reinstall one of the programs with missing shortcuts to confirm.

Any other issues? If not I will post instructions to remove the tools we use and some final recommendations for you.

Hi SleepyDude, I can not install Malwarebytes. It does not appear in the add remove programs. Everything else seems to be working  . I removed programs and reinstalled them and they are showing up now. Do you have something that can remove malwarebytes? I can then reinstall it and everything will be working again! Thank you very much for your time and patience. Should this happen again, could you tell me the steps that fixed this problem?

Malwarebytes isn't on the list of installed programs, are you sure you didn't uninstall it? Do you get any error when you try to install the program?

To remove Malwarebytes in case it's installed you can follow this guide.

The Shortcuts problem got resolved by restoring the called default file association for the .LNK files in the registry.

Hi SleepyDude, Thank you for all of your help :geek: . I was able to use the link for the uninstall of Malwarebytes and the reinstall, and everything is working Great! . It looked to me like two things went wrong with the conputer after that email was opened. I could not get to the internet and I could not install any programs to try to fix this problem. Is there a known name for the infection that my computer had? Have you seen this before? My Wife and I thank you for your hard work and effort in this matter. We could not have fixed this computer without your help. It is very nice to know that there are people like yourself who are willing to donate their time to help out people like myself. I have learned a lot from you regarding how my computer works!   Keep up the GREAT work and thank you VERY much!. My computer is now fixed :D .
