Hey guys, 

 

a couple of days ago, I completed my first pc build, which I'm quite happy about. Unfortunately though, not everything's working yet. The thing which I still can't get to work is Windows 7. But let me start from the beginning. 

 

The Computer is set up as dual boot (Win7 Pro x64 + Ubuntu) which - itself - works pretty well. As I've installed them on different SSDs, I can even choose between in the BIOS-Menu so no need to worry about Grub / MBR etc. 

 

Ubuntu works fine all the way, as I'm used to with other Linux OSs I had in the past years. Windows does not. 

 

Win7 is booting fine, but as it is loading, shortly before the login screen appears, the keyboard & mouse - probably all peripheral devices connected via USB - are turned off and don't work anymore. This happens about 29 out of 30 times I boot. Why it sometimes - very rarely - doesn't happen, I can't figure this out. It even happens in "safe mode" or if you select the option to "repair the computer" via F8.

I don't usually deal with Windows (I only use it for my Photo editing, but otherwise, I prefer Linux), so I can't really say much about this. Obviously, there are a lot of drivers which are getting loaded, but some also don't. 

 

I tried reinstalling both OSs, Win7 only, unplugging the SDD containing Linux, using TP/2 instead of USB connection, unplugging the USB devices and back in after bootup (both, USB2 and USB3 ports), but nothing could help me so far. 

 

 

I'm really frustrated about this because it prevents me from being able to use Lightroom & Photoshop, which was practically the main reason I decided to build the PC after using Thinkpads only for over a decade. 

 

If you got any recommendations, hints or whatsoever to solve my problem, I'd highly appreciate this!

Click on the Windows Start Menu, then right-click on Computer and select "Properties". From there, in the left-pane, click on "Device Manager". Can you tell me the name of the devices listed under "Missing/Unknown Devices" ?

 

Oh that's so kind of you, 

 

in fact, there's no entry for "missing / unknown devices" (or what this translates to, since I'm from Germany). The only thing I could find was "other devices". There are three entries listed below that: PCI communication controller (simple), SM-Bus-Controller and USB Controler. Unfortunately, neither of their drivers could be updated automatically.

Please download and install the drivers listed below. If it asks to reboot after an installation, please do so.

Hot fix and USB 3.0 drivers installed smoothly, management engine interface didn't. It says: "A required update is missing: kernelmodedriver framework 1.11 (KB 2685811)" (this was my direct translation, in German, it says "Kernelmodustreiber Framework 1.11 (KB 2685811)"). 

 

Can you help me with that too? And after that, do you want me to try again with my dual-boot setup or is there more to do?

The hotfix was supposed to prevent this from happening. Did it asks for a reboot ? If not, do one anyway and try to reinstall the drivers. Normally, you should have only one last Unknown Device left in the Device Manager right?

Nope, unfortunately not true. 

 

both, PCI controler ans SM-Bus are still unknown.

I just downloaded the Hotfix package, did you run the MSuSetup.exe or Setup.msu ?

I can't really remember, but as I tried again right now (with both of them), it told me that they were already installed and everything was fine... strangely. 

 

Anyway, its only SM-Bus controller which is left on the list of unknown devices now (after reboot, even though I wasn't asked for that). Any suggestions?

Oh yeah and one more thing: I now get asked every time on startup whether I want to run the usb3-thing I just installed... whether I click "run" or "abort" doesn't seem to make any difference though; and it's pretty annoying too

I suspect a wrong setting in the EFI/BIOS.   Attached devises all work if you enter the BIOS/EFI, (hardware OK) but at hand off to the OS, get disabled, or correct setting of the CSM support.

The Windows installation medium should load all the basic drivers (as you see n the list) so most of the attached hardware works, exceptions could be third party drivers like USB 3.0, LAN,

Turn off the PSU, > take anti static measures, > disconnect the Linux drive and any other external/internal hard drives.

Power up the computer, > enter the EFI using the Delete key. > go to the exit menu, > select Load Optimized Defaults, > press Enter, then confirm, Yes.  Your computer will reboot and load the OS.

Okay so to anwer your questions:

• Installation via CD. I tried all of them, ISO download, OEM and Retail, all gave me the same results. USB installation, which I tried first, did not work... it detected no boot medium even tough the downloaded ISO seemed to be finde, since I teste it in VirtualBox. Probably because of the same USB-issue I'm facing right now
• I installed in BIOS mode, as far as I can tell. There was only the option for the boot device with or without UEFI, and I opted for the latter one
• Concerning the Utilities CD: oh dear, I must have been dumb... I never even noticed that until you mentioned it! What should I do with it? Install all the drivers on it? ... I'll try that later in the day

 

But in general, I still don't see the point where it is caused by a misconfigured BIOS, since my Linux OS runs perfectly smooth. And right now, this also happens as I install Windows withoug Linux even plugged in to the SATA ports... But once I have both of them plugged in at one time (no matter wich one I'm booting), it destroys the device-support for Win7

I'm not sure yet, but I guess I'll find out; I'm usually not that bad when it comes to pc-tech-stuff, so that's gonna be fine

Thanks for the update.

As you are using two seperate drives, there should be no conflicts/corruption with a boot manager, so strange that when both diskx connected, Windows fails.

 

Please try the steps in reply #13 and post the result.

 

Re. the MB disc.   You would need windows running, > insert the CD, it should Auto run, > select Custom Install, > select drivers, > select All, > install.

When they are installed you will return to the install screen again, > select Utilities (possible software as well), select the ones you want.   I would not install the trial or free software.

When installation is complete, > click the Finish button, > reboot the system.
