hi 

 

 i need some advice please ... i have a custom built computer running xp pro ive tried formatting it but ive encountered loads of problems and all before it has even finished installing so thinking it was the disc i have bought a new windows xp sp3 disc put it into the computer restarted it and tried to to do fresh install but to no avail and im still getting loads of different problems 

 

1. when i used the 1st disc install got stuck at the information screen for about 2 hours (the one with the 5 circles on the left hand side telling you which stage it is at) with apparently 39 mins to go, so bit the bullet and restarted comp without cd in it got to that screen again and asked for cd then a pop up with "the file asms is missing blah blah blah" tried shift+f10 only causes it to crash ... restarted with cd and ended up with black screen blinking cursor top left  

 

2. bought new xp disc booted comp with it, i got a set up screen askin me which option i wanted to do i choose the installation choice and left it to do its thing, i cant remember at which point or what happened next but now i have the black screen blinking cursor again and cant seem to get any further forward 

 

i am a beginner with all this comp stuff but i have formatted my own comp in the past with no problems .... my mind is gonna explode 

 

sorry if i have babbled on i just tried to give as much info in a few amount of words lol

Some questions if I may;

 

Why the need for the format in the first place, were you having problems with the computer, if yes can you tell us what exactly.

Did you choose the Full NTFS format option before attempting to install XP.

What type of XP installation disk was initially used, a full retail, an OEM type or a burned copy.

Do you have a link to the replacement disk that you have purchased.

i formatted using the full ntfs as it kept restarting itself and rather than tryin to fix that problem i decided just to have a fresh install ( my teenage son used it last b4 i stored it away 2 yr ago)... the 1st disc i used was a copy and this next disc i bought is a genuine one, what do you mean by a link ???

Thanks for the additional info 

 

The issue may not be with either disk that is being used but alternatively an item of hardware such as the CD/DVD drive or the hard drive, you have been able to format the HDD which slightly reduces the chances of that being bad so perhaps a dirty lens within the CD/DVD drive itself or a loose internal connection, as the computer has been stored away for two years undisturbed a dirty drive lens is more likely, blowing out the drive with canned compressed air or simply exercising the drive by opening and closing the drive tray while a disk is inserted may also clean up the lens.

This error message can be caused when there is a communication problem with the CD/DVD drive.

 

 

the 1st disc i used was a copy and this next disc i bought is a genuine one, what do you mean by a link ??? 

 

 

If the error message was the same with both disks it does point towards a hardware as opposed to software issue and for the reason/s explained above.

 

Link as in to the specific disk and the place of purchase a Dell example only here

So sorry for late reply I've not been too good health wise and forgot all about it I had given up with tryin to sort it myself so I asked a family member to sort it for me thank you for all your time and advice its much appreciated ☺
