It's been over an hour, and I show nothing but the dberr.txt file in the catroot2 folder.

This doesn't look good...

Download Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable (use the Direct Download button)

  • extract the tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio.zip to c:\Windows\TEMP the zip will extract to a folder called Tweaking.com - Windows Repair
  • execute the file Repair_Windows.exe from the Tweaking.com - Windows Repair folder
  • click on the tab Step 5: Backup and on the buttons:
    • Backup to create a Registry Backup
    • Create to create a System Restore Point

  • click on the tab Start Repairs, next click the Open Repairs button to access the following screen:

WindowsRepair.png[/*]

  • click the box All Repairs to uncheck all the box's[/*]
  • check only the following box's:
    • 01 - Reset Registry Permissions
    • 02 - Reset File Permissions
    • 02.1 - File Permissions C:\
    • 03 - Reset Service Permissions
    • 26 - Restore Important Windows Services
    • 27 - Set Windows Services to Default Startup

check the box Restart/Shutdown System When Finished > Restart System[/*]

After the restart try to run the SURT tool from post #8

Run Minitoolbox with only the option List last 10 Event Viewer log and post the log please.

Two more questions:

- by any chance did you change/replace the HDD on the machine?

- please post the Service Tag of the machine

1. No, the HDD has not been changed or replaced.

2. The ST is C1Y5PM1.

Those two folders are now in the catroot2 folder, but there are no files beginning with edb.

When I click to run it, the cursor spins for a few seconds, then nothing happens. I've been waiting about 15 minutes, and no install dialog has come up yet.

I think it may just be time to call it and reformat.

I have to agree, due to the problems and no progress I'm not sure that a Repair Install will work!

The main reason I was trying to avoid that was to keep all the profile settings, programs, etc. Is there an easy way to put pretty much everything back the way it was?

You can try a Repair Install but I'm not sure it will fix the problem.

I'm just gong to go ahead and reformat it.

Thank you for your help, and the time you spent on this. I think we can mark this as solved.

You are welcome. After installing Windows 7 make sure you install Internet Explorer 11 (download it before install) then follow the guide from post #2 or most likely you will get stuck installing updates.
