Dear Geeks,

 

I am in desperate need of help from someone more computer literate than I am.

 

I have been trying to get rid of Bing (which I truly hate, I have never seen a more useless add-on) from Internet Explorer and Chrome. I have tried EVERY suggestion I found online as to how to do this. I successfully managed to remove Bing as a Search Provider via "manage add-ons". For all intensive purposes, it should be gone. I can find it nowhere on my computer. I was encouraged when I finally removed it completely as a search provider. However, every time I open a new tab in Internet Explorer or Chrome, it still pops up just like before. Like nothing happened. I have also tried every other method to get rid of it but they all failed. It is driving me bananas!

 

Does anyone out there have any idea why I cannot get rid of Bing?

Could it be some kind of malware/spyware? If so, what kind of anti-malware should I get to catch and destroy Bing? (It would need to be totally free- as I have no money to spend on it).

Did Windows 8.1 come pre installed on a brand name computer, if yes , can you post the brand and model name or number of the computer so that we can do some research.

My laptop computer is an HP Pavilion.

The icon/"name" on the back of the screen (like in the top right hand corner when the laptop is closed) says either "d4" or "dy" - I am not sure which. Probably d4? Whatever that means

MODEL: 15-BO23CL. 

It came with Windows 8.1 Pro.

 

Is that all the information you needed?

Reason why we needed to know the computer details was because to keep costs down OEM companies such as HP did a deal with Microsoft whereby HP were allowed to install Windows on their less expensive computers totally free of charge, the catch was that Bing was incorporated into Windows and could not be uninstalled like you would be able to with another browser such as Chrome or FF, doesn`t look to be the case here though as you mention that you are running the Pro version of Windows and not what was referred to as Windows 8.1 with Bing, see info here

 

 

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s. 

 

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Update: I found a way to remove it from Chrome. But its still on my Internet Explorer. When I read about it online it says Internet Explorer is configured with Bing. Does that mean Bing can't be removed from Internet Explorer?

Chrome has nothing to do with Bing I`m afraid.

 

Sounds to me like you may actually have the Bing version of Windows and not the Pro version that you thought you had, still, like Edge in Windows 10 you can make Chrome the default browser and Bing will be hidden until you ever wanted to enable it again, Bing is embedded into IE and can only be disabled not uninstalled, this again the same as with Edge in Windows 10.
