Hot CPU?

Best Answer RKinner , 22 May 2021 - 03:36 PM

Probably just tells us that MSI has really poor quality control. You paid a lot of money for the things so if you are not happy send them back. Go to the full post »

Hi everyone.

First, I want to explain that I am trying to become a geek, but thus far I don't have a clue what I am doing. Please excuse stupid questions.

I have purchased new laptops for my self and my mother, they are exactly the same.

I have been testing them to make sure they are lemons according to this video I found on youtube:

I am 4 minutes into the video. I ran the cinebench fan and CPU tests on both. The sound of the fans are similar between the two laptops, but mine is a little louder. Our processors usually rank a 9 according to cinebench, but my mothers ranks a 7 and mine an 8 (I believe the smaller the number, the better, so this is good, I think).

When I ran hwinfo.com with cinebench to test the temperature of the processor, my mothers stayed around 81-87 degrees at the most. Mine stayed around 88 at first, then towards the end of the test it was consistently at 91-95 degrees. The video above states that it shouldn't be above 90 for any sustained period. Mine was above 90 for about five minutes or so during the cinebench test.

When the laptops are sitting idle, mine makes a louder whining noise. They both make the same noise, but mine is a bit louder when the laptops are doing nothing.

My questions are:

Is this strange that our identical laptops test and sound differently?

Does this indicate my processor is bad?

In the above video, Josh explains something to do if your CPU runs hot. I don't understand what he says to do, and worry that following these instructions will hide the fact that my processor is bad, leading to a later problem that may show up just as soon as the return date is over. Are the steps he describes some easy setting that will fix this issue, or will it void the warranty?

I would rather not have to return this laptop, but I spent a lot of money on it, and don't want to be stuck with one that will break shortly or not perform as expected.

Is what I have described my computer doing even an issue I should be worried about?

Are there other tests I should run?

Thank you.

Get Process Explorer

https://live.sysinte...com/procexp.exe

Save it to your desktop then run it (Vista or Win7+ - right click and Run As Administrator).

View, Select Column, check Verified Signer, OK
Options, Verify Image Signatures

Click twice on the CPU column header  to sort things by CPU usage with the big hitters at the top.

Wait a full minute then:

File, Save As, Save.  Note the file name.   Open the file  on your desktop and copy and paste the text to a reply.

It looks like they have changed the defaults.  Try again but this time go to View and check Show Processes From All Users then create the log.

That worked.

I was hoping we would find some program using too much CPU but that's not the case.  Everything looks very normal.

Let's do a benchmark:

Let's get a benchmark:

https://www.userbenchmark.com

Click on Free Download.  Save the file then right click and Run As Admin.  Close all programs and pause your antivirus before starting.

When it finishes it will open a browser.  Copy the URL and paste it into a Reply.

So far it looks pretty good but I can't hear it run.  Normally the fan doesn't even run on a laptop unless the CPU is under load or if it does you don't usually hear it.  The fact that you can hear a loud whine indicates the fan is not healthy.  I think I would take it back.

This is how the other identical laptop did on the test you just asked me to run on the one that ran hot:

https://www.userbenc...serRun/43137516

I am wondering now if I wasn't being paranoid about the noise, as I can't tell a noticeable difference between the sound of the two laptops now.

However, I am wondering about how the graphics scored on both laptops. I have Nvidia Geoforce RTX 2060, which this test says should be 100%, not 5% or 6%. However, it seems that this tested my intel graphics, not nvidia. Is this a concern?

I have waited a long time to get this laptop. I would rather return it than be stuck with one not worth my money, but I don't want to waste time returning it if I am being paranoid. I noticed if I run the Fur Mark test more than once, both computers later score better. Are benchmark tests generally reliable? Is it normal to get different scores at different times? I have never done this before. Thanks.

Run dxdiag it should show us which graphic driver we are using:

Open an elevated command prompt:

(search for

cmd

it will find Command Prompt, right click on it and Run As Admin.)

Type:

dxdiag

hit Enter.

Wait until it finishes (green line is gone) then Save All Information  Note where you save it.   Attach to the reply:

(First click on More Reply Options
Then scroll down to where you see
Choose File and click on it.  Point it at the file and hit Open.
Now click on Attach this file.)

Benchmarks will vary slightly.  One factor is the CPU usage by other programs.  Oddly enough the second PC has more CPU usage but a better score.

Since you say the 2nd pc shows more CPU usage, yet better performance, this also points to the first laptop being defective in some way and is more evidence to back up that the best option being to return it, correct?

DxDiag shows both your intel & NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060.  I suppose the intel is builtin to the CPU so is going to show up no matter what.

You might also go to Nvidia's website and see if their latest driver for the RTX 2060 wants to install.

https://www.nvidia.c...eforce/drivers/

What I do see is that you have an a very outdated version of Windows 10.  When Windows 10 gets too far behind the current build it no longer updates automatically.  We can force it tho.

Go to

https://www.microsof...nload/windows10

Click on Update Now.  Download, Save and go to your downloads folder then right click on the downloaded file and Run As Admin.  Follow the instructions.  Usually takes about three hours to complete but a slow link will take longer.

If you look closely at the benchmarks you will see that the two PCs are NOT the same.  One has a Kingston SSD while the other has a Western Digital.  The Western Digital performs much better than the Kingston and that may be the major difference in performance.  Could be one or both is/are not new but "remanufactured."    I forget the term they usually use in the ads but basically a returned product that has been repaired supposedly to factory specs and repackaged as new.

You are right, also the 1st laptop (hotter one) has a Hynix HMA82GS6CJR8N-VK 2x16GB RAM, while the 2nd (better running) one has Samsung M471A2K43CB1-CTD 2x16GB. It seems like the Samsung runs better than the Hynix, also, right? It never occurred to me that one might be remanufactured. Neither were supposed to be, I wonder if so which one?

I will try updating the graphics cards and Windows 10, and see how the do after that. Is there some type of setting I need to change so that the computers use the Nvidia graphics, or are they using it and the test just checked the intel? There is no point in having Nvidia graphics if the computer's default is intel.

Is it weird that the intel graphics seem to be UHD while my screens are FHD?

Could the outdated windows and graphics make the one laptop's CPU run hotter?

This is really cool, I feel like I am learning a lot. Thank you so much.

I contacted MSI (these are MSI laptops), and they said that they do not specify the manufacturer of the SSD or RAM, and said it could be different between two of the same laptops even if they are brand new. Is this normal, or are they trying to pull one over on me?
