Hi all,

I have a Dell XPS 8940 and needed to install a graphics card to run a 3D scan processing application. I ended up getting a GEFORCE RTX 3060 Ti (dual-rtx3060ti-O8GD6X) as I saw it was compatible with the computer. I have since installed it and realized the power from the computer is 6pin while the GPU is 2, 8 pin power. I'm not extremely computer literate so this may sound dumb but is there a converter for the computer's current powers supply to make the GPU functional or do I need an external power supply to run it?

If I do need an external power supply, do you have any recommendations? Once plugged in and turned on do I need to activate anything or will the GPU just be running and I can start running my applications?

Thank you for your help in advance!

:welcome:  same27,

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you actually need a new PSU, the present Dell is not only incompatible but also too weak.

Is the GPU here the same type of card that you have.

Thanks for the reply! And yes that is the same card, are you saying if I get a new PSU that the card will work with my computer or even if I do get a new supply it still won't work?

And do you have a recommendation for a PSU if so?

Thanks!

The new GPU requires a minimum of a Gold efficiency rated 750W PSU from a proven brand such as the Corsair RM range, EVGA, Seasonic or Super Flower, this causes you a problem as the PSU and MB in your computer are unique to Dell, please see related threads here

You are welcome btw.

Hi,

I think your best option is to return the graphic card and try to buy one of those graphic cards models on the Dell webpage that are compatible with your computer.
