Yes you have to be connected online for that dism command to work.

.....& we're back!

Re-ran Step 2 from post #4. Process Explorer download was of 2 types so I ran both:

Attached File  SystemIdleProcess-26JAN.txt   17.38KB   10 downloads

Attached File  SystemIdleProcess64-26JAN.txt   17.12KB   10 downloads

...................................................................

Re-ran Step 3 from post #4 :

Attached File  SystemLog-26JAN.txt   15.38KB   12 downloads

Attached File  ApplicationLog-26JAN.txt   11.87KB   13 downloads

....................................................................

I also re-did the dism operation & was sure to stay online.....100% completed.

I'll be honest & say it seems much better!  I did notice a vast improvement once we uninstalled Avast / MWB!!..........

If you are OK then I will re-install MWB Premium, leave Avast Free off & keep Defender running....?

I will also uninstall Avast from my older laptop & keep MWB Premium & Defender running.

Question: Would I be correct in my understanding that running the processes you advised would also clean up my older laptop?  If I have the opportunity to be sure it is running well then I would like to take it!...........

Okay good to hear. Yes that would be my recommendation. Let us know if you need anything else. Best regards

Sorry I missed your question on your old laptop. You are welcomed me to perform all those commands but it would be best to start a new post work directly with that laptop each computer can require different things depending on the issues.

I would start by removing Avast and follow the steps below for a good start at cleaning it up

Rkill
1. Download Rkill from the below link.
https://www.bleeping...ownload/rkill/I
2. Double click on Rkill program to stop the malicious programs from running
3. RKill will now start working in the background, please be patient while this utiltiy looks for malicious process and tries to end them
4. When the Rkill tool has completed its task, it will generate a log. Do not reboot your computer after running RKill as the malware programs will start again
5. Upload or Paste your Log file to next reply

Adware Cleaner
Download https://toolslib.net...loads/finish/1/to your desktop.
Important! Before starting AdwCleaner, close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
Windows Vista/ 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
Click on the scan button
When the scan is ready click on the Clean button
Upload or Paste the log in your next reply.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to your desktop.
https://www.malwareb...m/mwb-download/
Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Then click Finish.
If an update is found, you will be prompted to download and install the latest version.
Once the program has Started
Click on the Settings button
Click on Protection tab
Enable the Scan for rootkits
select Scan now. Or select the Threat Scan from the Scan menu.
When the scan is complete , make sure that that all Threats are selected, and click Remove Selected.
Reboot your computer if prompted.
After the restart, Open Malwarebytes
Click on the History tab > Application Logs.
Double click on the Scan Log which shows the Date and time of the scan just performed.
Click 'Export'.
Click 'Text file (*.txt)

Hi folks,

Glad to see progress has been made

Couple of things to mention, one in answer to a question you asked and one as an advisory for you OZDOUG;

Quick Question: If I uninstall Malwarebytes & Avast then how am I sure that Defender will cover me?

Some of the info below courtesy of admin here added in 8.1 and 10 as the same information applies;

Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 come with an improved Windows Defender, it offers the same real-time anti-virus/anti-malware protection as Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender also shares the same malware signature definitions as Microsoft Security Essentials, and Forefront Endpoint Protection. Technically, Microsoft Security Essentials has not been renamed Windows Defender, or combined with it in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10.

I will re-install MWB Premium, leave Avast Free off & keep Defender running....?

As MBAM Premium is a full AV package Defender should disable itself when it detects the presence but you should manually check that it does, regarding having MBAM Premium and Avast installed at the same time, this is a no/no, the two will conflict as they fight for resources which will slow a computer down and you can actually be left with no AV protection at all if the programs cancel each other out, tips on securing your computer here and in particular the Important note:

If any AV product that you have is a paid for version you should always make sure that you have a copy of the product key kept somewhere safe just in case you ever wish to reinstall it.

You are welcome OZDOUG, glad we could help

NB: The confusion with MBAM is likely to be that the free version is ok alongside AVs such as Avast etc, this because the free version is only the on demand scanner as opposed to the paid for Premium version which provides full real time protection.
