Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

Launch Notepad (start -> run -> "notepad"), and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Select "all files" in the "save as type" field. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir "C:\Documents and Settings\Ed\My Documents\??crosoft\?hkdsk.exe" /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here in a reply to this post.

Rambro,
There is no text in the notepad file that comes up. The message in the C prompt window, after the code you gave me, says "the filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect." Can you tell me how serious this all is in your next reply?
Thank You,
Bubbs

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

This link should explain it: http://forums.tomcoy...showtopic=42844

You have PurityScan on your computer. What this virus does is to create duplicate bad files of "legitimate files", the only way to distinguish these bad files (The one with the question marks in them) from the legitimate ones is to find the date they were created and the size of the file. Try the following again:

Launch Notepad (start -> run -> "notepad"), and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Select "all files" in the "save as type" field. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir "C:\Documents and Settings\Ed\My Documents\??crosoft\?hkdsk.exe" /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Do not forget the double quotes

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here in a reply to this post.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

Try this:

dir "C:\Documents and Settings\Ed\My Documents\Microsoft\chkdsk.exe" /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Do not forget the double quotes

Rambro,
Still no text. "The system cannot locate the file specified" is in the c prompt window. I am copying and pasting directly from your code box. Double quotes are there.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Please download WinHelp2002's DelDomains by right-clicking on the following link, and choosing "Save Target As": http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf. Save the file to the desktop. Then go to the desktop, right click on DelDomains.inf, and choose Install. You may not see any noticeable changes or prompts; this is normal. Certain programs will have to be reimmunized for example, SpywareBlaster, IE-SPYAD, and/or Spybot Search and Destroy, after doing the above procedure (i.e. that is, if you have these programs installed on your computer).

Please restart your computer.
*******************************

Click Start then Control Panel then Add and Remove Programs. Look for the following installed program/programs and if they are listed click on each one and then click on the Remove or Change button and if asked select "Yes" or "Ok" to remove:

E2give Plug-in

Optional programs you can uninstall, through the Add/Remove program:

NoAdware4 Adware/Spyware remover - initially considerered a "rogue" program, see the following link: http://www.adwarerep...ves/000023.html.

However, it has been "de-listed" as a "rogue" program, see the following link: http://www.spywarewa...re.htm#naw_note.

To play safe, please uninstall this software.

Uninstall the following program/programs through Add/Remove programs (if they exist):

NoAdware4
******************

Spyware Soft Stop is a "Spyware remover" of dubious repute, it is part of the "Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Product" list, go to the following web site: http://www.spywarewa...nti-spyware.htm through your IE browser. In the IE browser menu bar click on "Edit" and Find (on this page). The "Find" dialog box should pop up, type in the "Find what" text box the following: "Spyware Soft Stop", then click on the "Find Next" button. This should bring you to a spot on the web page that describes the problems with the "Spyware Soft Stop" application.

Uninstall the following program through Add/Remove programs:

Spyware Soft Stop

Restart your computer.
*************************

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

Optional Fixes

I highly recommend you to fix this item:

If you choose to remove Spyware Soft Stop, put a check next to the following entry as well:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Software Soft Stop] C:\Program Files\Spyware Soft Stop\Spyware Soft Stop.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Hi Rambro,
WHEW! I did everything you posted. Below is the new hjk log. I no longer get any error messages on start up of windows. No missing file errors either. There is still a couple things that could not be removed. The popups come in spurts but they are not controling my screen anymore. Thank you so much for getting me this far.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

Let me explain what is going on with your HijackThis log. Other then the bad, hidden, files that might be on your computer system, from your last HijackThis log, here are the following lines that are bad in this log:

O2 - BHO: CControl Object - {3643ABC2-21BF-46B9-B230-F247DB0C6FD6} - C:\Program Files\E2G\IeBHOs.dll

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: inicfg32.dll

Please repeat Post #8 in this thread and let's see if we can get lucky and see if we can eliminate the O20 line in the HijackThis log.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

Please download SilentRunners from here: http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.zip. Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile in a reply to this post.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

Try not to run "HijackThis.exe" from a tempory folder, always run it from a permanent folder.

Also here is something to think about:

Dear bubbles4u35, please consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is fantastic; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in popup blocker (as an added benefit!) that I have ever seen. If you are interested, Firefox may be downloaded from here: http://www.mozilla.o...oducts/firefox/

Another browser you might consider using is called "Opera", here is a link: http://www.opera.com/

I would keep your Internet Explorer as a backup browser for "windows updates" and to perform online scans, because Internet Explorer contains a thing called "Active X", which the FireFox and the Opera browser do not have.

Dear bubbles4u35, :whistling:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Dear bubbles4u35, I would like you to edit your "registry settings", but before you do that, I want you to make a back up copy of your "registry" in case something goes wrong. Here is how this is done:

Back up your current registry

1) Click on the Start button.

2) From the menu that appears, choose Run.

3) In the window that appears, there is a text area labeled Open. In that area, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks").

4) Click the OK button (or hit the Enter or Return key on your keyboard).

5) The Registry Editor window should open.

6) If My Computer is not highlighted, click on it once so that it is highlighted.

7) On the menu bar, click on Registry and then click on Export Registry File.

8) The Export Registry File window will appear. In the Save In drop-down box at the top, choose Desktop.

9) In the File Name box at the bottom, type "backup" (without the quotation marks), then click the Save button.

10) A backup copy of the entire registry will now be saved to your desktop in case something goes wrong.

Notes:

* To restore the registry from the backup file you made, follow the same steps as above, but in step 2 choose Import Registry File instead of Export Registry File. Or, alternatively, you could double-click on the backup file on the desktop and answer Yes when it asks if you want to import the information into the registry.
* Once you've made changes to the registry and you are sure that you no longer need the backup file you made, simply delete it from the desktop.

See the following link: http://helpdesk.umd....ndows_2000/555/. Pay attention to the following sections: Starting the Registry Editor and Backing Up the Registry.
****************************

1. Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
2. Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

folders to delete:
C:\Program Files\E2G\IeBHOs.dll

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Under "Script file to execute" choose "Input Script Manually".
  • Now click on the Magnifying Glass icon which will open a new window titled "View/edit script"
  • Paste the text copied to clipboard into this window by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click Done
  • Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply Add/Reply
**************************************

Edit your registry

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\Run]
"nwefer"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{3643ABC2-21BF-46B9-B230-F247DB0C6FD6}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"=-

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".

Please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.
******************************

Please restart your computer and then post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :blink:
